Full Job Description
This role is categorized as hybrid, meaning the selected candidate will be expected to work on-site at the Warren Tech Center at least three days per week (or other frequency determined by their manager).
This role is eligible for relocation benefits
About the Role
The Senior Transmission and Drive Unit Engineering Designer independently leads the design and integration of complex transmission and drive unit components and subsystems from concept through validation, release, and launch.
This role balances performance, safety, customer experience, cost, mass, timing, dimensional robustness, and manufacturing feasibility. The designer works across engineering, manufacturing, safety, CAE, dimensional engineering, suppliers, and program teams to resolve complex design challenges and deliver robust products.
Responsibilities
Lead the design and integration of complex transmission and drive unit components, subsystems, and interfaces.
Translate engineering, safety, regulatory, customer, and manufacturing requirements into robust designs.
Make design trade-offs involving performance, cost, mass, timing, dimensional variation, assembly, serviceability, and manufacturability.
Develop advanced NX models using parametric, associative, and Wave-linked techniques.
Create NX assemblies and perform clearance, interference, packaging, and integration studies.
Use Teamcenter and TcVis to manage product structures, configurations, and design data.
Create and release complete 2D drawings and PMI, including GD&T, dimensional strategies, tolerance stacks, Design Execution Sections, notes, and interface requirements.
Define materials, mass properties, center of gravity, and interface criteria.
Lead DFM/DFA reviews with Manufacturing Engineering and plant teams.
Interpret CAE and designer-led analysis using NX Performance Predictor, NX Pre/Post, SimSolid, and Ansys results.
Apply vehicle and transmission assembly structures, integration modules, tracking vehicles, and installation assemblies.
Use GM product development, configuration, issue, and change-management processes and tools, including GVDP/GPDP, Momentum, eMERGE, GM Logic, APM, and Teamcenter.
Use PRTS, Whysdom, and Jira to identify issues, drive corrective actions, and prevent recurrence.
Benchmark internal and competitive designs and apply best practices, AUROS, and lessons learned.
Lead technical discussions and present design recommendations across functional teams.
Mentor designers and contribute to standard work, design methods, templates, and continuous improvement.
Basic Qualifications
Significant experience in automotive engineering design.
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, engineering technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Advanced Siemens NX experience, including complex modeling, assemblies, design intent, Wave linking, and clearance analysis.
Advanced experience with Teamcenter, TcC, Active Workspace, TcVis, and product-structure management.
Experience creating engineering drawings and PMI using GD&T, tolerance analysis, dimensional strategies, and interface definitions.
Knowledge of automotive engineering principles, safety, durability, regulatory requirements, and design verification.
Experience applying DFM/DFA, manufacturing processes, fastening standards, and plant requirements.
Ability to interpret CAE results and convert findings into design recommendations.
Experience with digital vehicle, configuration, issue, and engineering-change tools.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, planning, and decision-making skills.
Ability to lead cross-functional work, influence decisions, mentor others, and manage multiple technical deliverables.
Strong organization, ownership, follow-through, and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
Transmission and drive unit design experience involving gears, shafts, housings, clutches, differentials, lubrication, actuation, mounts, or related interfaces.
Experience integrating vehicle architecture, manufacturing, safety, CAE, dimensional engineering, and program requirements.
Graduate degree in engineering.
Experience with Standard Math Models, user-defined features, or reusable design templates.
Design for Six Sigma certification.
Experience with NX Performance Predictor, NX Pre/Post, or SimSolid.
Experience with dimensional engineering, GD&T, tolerance stacks, variation management, and launch quality.
