PositionDigi International is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our Wireless Design Services team as a hands-on hardware designer. This role is centered on electrical hardware design for embedded products, with many projects incorporating wireless technologies. You will own the electrical design of customer products, solve challenging engineering problems, and carry designs from concept through verification, certification, and production release.
This is an individual contributor role for a fully qualified engineer who delivers independently and is a reliable technical reference for the team. The ideal candidate is curious, self-directed, and comfortable taking ownership in an environment where projects and customer needs vary.
Location: Hybrid, based at global headquarters in Hopkins, MN What You Will Do - Own the electrical design of embedded and wireless products from concept through production, selecting the right design approach and making defensible design decisions.
- Design electronic circuits, select components, create and review schematics, and direct PCB layout.
- Build, bring up, test, troubleshoot, and improve electronic circuits and embedded hardware platforms with minimal oversight.
- Evaluate design tradeoffs related to performance, reliability, power, cost, manufacturability, component availability, and product lifecycle, and explain the rationale to peers and stakeholders.
- Participate in customer discussions to understand requirements, clarify technical challenges, and present practical design recommendations.
- Translate customer and system needs into electrical requirements, interfaces, design specifications, and verification plans.
- Partner with firmware, RF, software, mechanical, manufacturing, and project management teams throughout product development.
- Lead hardware integration, verification, validation, and certification activities within the electrical design scope, and support production and sustaining engineering.
- Identify technical risks early, propose mitigation, and communicate clearly with internal stakeholders and customers.
- Mentor entry-level engineers, contribute to team best practices, and drive continuous improvement in design quality.
Who You Are and What You Bring - Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of progressive experience designing commercial electronic products (or M.S. with 3+ years).
- Experience taking a hardware design from concept through manufacturing and production release.
- Hands-on experience with the full hardware design cycle: circuit design, schematic capture, component selection, PCB layout direction and review, board bring-up, testing, and troubleshooting.
- Experience designing embedded hardware using microcontrollers, processors, sensors, power supplies, and digital communication interfaces.
- Working understanding of signal integrity, thermal mitigation, power analysis, and impedance matching in real designs.
- Ability to articulate circuit and architecture tradeoffs clearly to technical and nontechnical audiences.
- Demonstrated initiative, ownership, and the ability to deliver technical work independently while managing multiple priorities.
Desired But Not Required - Experience developing connected or wireless products from concept through production.
- Working knowledge of RF fundamentals and wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth/BLE, Zigbee, cellular, GNSS/GPS, or LoRa.
- Experience leading or supporting regulatory and product certification activities, such as FCC, UL, ETL, ETSI, PTCRB, or other applicable standards.
- Experience in a product development consulting, design services, or other customer-facing engineering environment.
- Systems engineering exposure: requirements definition, architecture, V&V, and product lifecycle management.
- Familiarity with Digi System-on-Modules (SOMs), Single-Board Computers (SBCs), or XBee products.
- Experience using scripting or automation to improve engineering development, testing, or analysis.
What Success Looks Like - Delivers hardware designs independently and becomes a reliable technical reference for the team.
- Takes ownership of challenging technical problems and produces practical, manufacturable solutions.
- Communicates clearly with customers and internal teams throughout the product development process.
- Contributes to the quality of the team's work through sound design decisions, best practices, and mentoring of junior engineers.
