Job Title: Specialist, Mechanical Engineer Job Number: 44926Job Location: Amityville, NY Job Schedule: 9/80 On Site - Employees work 9 out of 14 days totaling 80 hours worked and have every other Friday off Job Description:L3Harris Stress engineers will review and interpret the mechanical environmental conditions provided in the statement of work and the technical performance specification as it applies to the equipment being developed under the program. Internal loads that will size the equipment to meet the program technical requirements will be developed based on the externally applied acceleration, vibration, shock, and other dynamic loads. The appropriate factors of safety will be applied when writing yield and ultimate margins of safety to demonstrate structural integrity and considering temperature effects on material properties and strength allowables.
Stress engineers are responsible for achieving a compliant design which will meet all program environmental requirements and demonstrated by successfully passing qualification testing. This will be accomplished by conducting hand calculations based on strength of materials and structural mechanics theory. Finite element analysis (FEA), using Ansys, will be employed when conducting structural dynamic analysis of complex geometry individual parts and/or multi-body assemblies.
Essential Functions:- Review and interpret mechanical environmental requirements from the statement of work and technical performance specifications.
- Determine how environmental conditions (acceleration, vibration, shock, dynamic loads) impact equipment being developed.
- Develop internal loads needed to size and design hardware to meet technical requirements.
- Apply proper factors of safety and produce yield/ultimate margins of safety considering temperature effects on materials.
- Produce compliant structural designs capable of passing environmental qualification testing.
- Perform hand calculations based on strength of materials and structural mechanics theory.
- Conduct finite element analysis (FEA) using Ansys for complex part geometries and multi-body assemblies.
- Create clean, accurate FE models with optimized geometry and meshing practices.
- Model component interactions within assemblies (contacts, joints, beams, constraint equations) depending on fidelity needs.
- Analyze structural and thermal loads on electronic assemblies, including Circuit Card Assemblies (CCAs).
- Generate structural and thermal margins for CCA hardware and component junction temperatures.
- Use Icepak or similar thermal/CCA modeling tools when applicable.
- Use CAD solid modeling tools to ensure analyzed geometry matches as-designed geometry.
- Collaborate closely with the integrated product development team throughout the design and analysis process.
- Support physical testing by helping create test setups, monitoring tests, and analyzing test data.
- Correlate analytical predictions with physical test results and adjust models accordingly.
- Prepare and deliver presentations summarizing analysis results.
- Document analysis findings clearly in PowerPoint or Word report formats.
- Ability to obtain a U.S. security clearance.
Qualifications:- Bachelor's Degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.
Preferred Additional Skills:- Non-linear structural analysis
