Job Summary We are hiring a full-time Software Engineer to build the tools, applications, and platforms that help University of Michigan researchers develop, test, and evaluate AI in healthcare.
You'll work directly with researchers and our technical team to turn ideas into working solutions, building AI-powered applications, backend services, APIs, and integrations with clinical and university systems. Your work will include connecting large language models with institutional resources, deploying applications in secure OpenShift/Kubernetes environments, and developing reusable capabilities that help research teams move faster.
We're looking for an engineer who enjoys solving unfamiliar problems, takes ownership from initial concept through deployment, and works iteratively with users to improve what they build. Healthcare data integration is one component of a broader role spanning software development, systems integration, automation, and AI tool deployment. This position focuses on engineering the systems that enable AI research rather than developing new machine learning algorithms.
This position is hybrid, based primarily from home with onsite opportunities in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A fully remote arrangement will be considered for exceptional candidates.
Responsibilities*- Design, build, and maintain AI-enabled research tools, applications, and shared platforms, taking solutions from initial concept through testing, deployment, and ongoing improvement.
- Collaborate with researchers, clinicians, and technical colleagues to understand needs, define requirements, and deliver practical solutions through rapid prototyping and iterative development.
- Develop backend services, APIs, automation, and application components that connect AI tools with research workflows and institutional systems.
- Integrate large language model APIs and institutionally approved AI services into applications, including access to relevant data and evaluation of system behavior.
- Build, deploy, and troubleshoot containerized applications and services in OpenShift/Kubernetes environments, partnering with infrastructure and security teams.
- Develop reusable software components and integrations that reduce duplicated effort across research projects.
- Apply sound software engineering practices, including version control, code review, automated testing, documentation, monitoring, and maintainable system design.
- Integrate applications with Epic MiChart, U-M GPT, REDCap, research data platforms, and other services in partnership with institutional subject-matter experts.
- Design database structures and data-access patterns, and develop data pipelines and interfaces as needed to support applications and AI-enabled workflows.
