This Software Development Engineer II role is part of the Commerce Attributes Store Team team which sits within our Technology division. The team builds and supports Commerce Data products that provide a trusted, single source of truth for booking information, including the attributes and metrics used by analytics and other Expedia Group teams. In this role, you will independently deliver well-scoped software components and services that contribute to scalable, reliable systems and clear APIs while working with guidance from more senior engineers.
In this role, you will:- Develop and maintain streaming and batch data-processing pipelines that support scalable, secure, and high-quality data products and services.
- Build and operate data workflows using Kafka, Spark, and Amazon S3, applying appropriate patterns for real-time ingestion, transformation, storage, and downstream consumption.
- Design, build, and evolve reliable data-intensive software solutions using Java, including system design (LLD), API design, and data modeling.
- Collaborate with product, data, and engineering teams to translate requirements into reusable technical solutions, well-structured data flows, and maintainable service integrations.
- Own the end-to-end lifecycle of assigned components and features, including implementation, automated testing, deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and incident resolution.
- Safely integrate and operate AI/ML-enabled solutions that improve outcomes, including familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows and applying AI/ML concepts to real world products.
Minimum Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field; or equivalent practical experience in software development or data engineering.
- 2+ years of relevant professional experience building and maintaining production software, data-processing systems, or data pipelines in a team environment.
- Demonstrated ownership of well-defined services, components, pipelines, or features, including contributions to design, implementation, quality, deployment, and operational support.
- Proficiency in Java, with experience applying software engineering fundamentals-including data structures, algorithms, system design (LLD), API design, and data modeling-to real systems.
- Hands-on experience with streaming and batch data processing, including Kafka, Spark, and Amazon S3, as well as familiarity with AI-driven tools or workflows that enhance development productivity or product capabilities.
Preferred Qualifications:- Experience designing and evolving data-processing architectures that combine streaming and batch patterns, with well-structured data models, integration points, and reliable downstream consumption.
- Experience improving the performance, scalability, resilience, or reliability of Kafka- and Spark-based pipelines and services operating on high-volume or latency-sensitive workloads.
- Practice with operational excellence for data systems, including logging, metrics, monitoring, observability, alerting, data-quality validation, and participation in on-call or incident response.
- Experience using data, experimentation, or pipeline metrics to validate technical approaches, identify bottlenecks, and measure the impact of delivered data-processing improvements.
- Experience integrating or extending AI/ML-enabled capabilities within data pipelines or software services, including responsible use of AI-driven components and AI tooling for code quality, testing, data validation, or operational workflows.
The total cash range for this position in Austin is $119,000.00 to $166,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $190,500.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.
Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual's knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
