Northrop Grumman’s Space Systems is seeking an Engineering Technician to join our team in Chandler, AZ. This position is 100% onsite and does not accommodate telecommuting. The selected candidate will work a 9/80 schedule, with every other Friday off.
The Engineering Technician supports the Calibration Laboratory by performing hands-on work with electronic, dimensional, mechanical, and electromechanical test equipment. This role focuses on executing calibration procedures, building and troubleshooting test setups, collecting and analyzing data, and supporting engineering in the development and improvement of calibration methods and software‑driven procedures. The technician will assist with programming and maintaining automated calibration procedures in calibration management software, helping improve efficiency, repeatability, and data integrity across the lab. The technician will also work primarily in a lab environment, with occasional support to field activities, and will help ensure traceability to NIST standards and compliance with ISO 17025 requirements.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Complete all assigned training and work under the guidance of a mentor until satisfactory proficiency is demonstrated.
- Set up and operate calibration standards and test equipment (e.g., multifunction calibrators, oscilloscopes, DMMs, pressure controllers, torque standards, dimensional gages) per documented procedures and engineering direction.
- Execute calibration and functional test procedures, record as-found/as-left data, and document any abnormalities in accordance with lab processes and quality requirements.
- Use calibration management software to open, execute, and document calibration procedures, including entering results, attaching records, and ensuring proper configuration control of procedures.
- Assist engineering in developing, modifying, and validating automated or semi‑automated calibration procedures within calibration software.
- Assist engineering in method development, uncertainty evaluations, and Gage R&R, including basic data reduction and plotting in Excel or similar tools.
- Support troubleshooting of equipment and setups, including basic fault isolation and repair coordination under engineering supervision.
- Maintain good lab organization, including inventory of standards, working instruments, cables, and fixtures; verify that all equipment is within calibration and properly labeled.
- Support both laboratory and field activities as required; travel may be required to support off-site or on-site customer equipment.
- Safely handle and transport test equipment and hardware; must be capable of lifting up to 50 lbs repeatedly.
- Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
- High school diploma or recognized equivalent, and 2 years of additional education and/or related experience (such as calibration, metrology, electronics, mechanical, or test technician work).
- Hands-on experience with test and measurement equipment and/or electronic or mechanical assemblies (school, military, or industry experience).
- Familiarity with computer‑based test or calibration tools, data entry in technical software, or other software‑driven test environments (e.g., Fluke Met/Cal).
- Ability to read and work from procedures, schematics, engineering drawings, and work instructions.
- Proficiency with standard office tools (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and basic familiarity with shared repositories (e.g., SharePoint, Confluence, or similar systems).
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to follow documented processes and manage multiple concurrent tasks.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills; comfortable interacting with engineers, analysts, technicians, quality, and program personnel in structured technical settings.
- Must be capable of lifting 50 lbs through a wide range of motions.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Secret security clearance per company and business needs. U.S. citizenship is a prerequisite.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Completion of a technical trade school, community college program, or military technical school in electronics, mechanical, metrology, or a related discipline.
- Experience working in a calibration laboratory, metrology lab, engineering lab, or test environment.
- Familiarity with the application of measurement theory (accuracy, uncertainty, linearity, repeatability) and how it applies to calibration and test.
- Hands-on knowledge/experience in one or more of the following disciplines: electrical, dimensional, thermodynamic, mass, force, pressure, or torque measurements.
- Experience using or configuring calibration management software or automated calibration platforms (e.g., creating/modifying procedures, limits, or data‑capture routines).
- Experience with ISO 17025, AS9100, or similar quality/technical standards.
- Experience using data-analysis tools (e.g., Excel, basic statistics, trend charts) to review calibration or test results.
- Active U.S. Government Secret security clearance.
