Senior Underwriter
Key Responsibilities
- Review life insurance applications, medical records, financial documentation, and supporting information to assess risk and make sound underwriting decisions.
- Evaluate applications across both domestic and international lines of business, determining whether cases should be approved, declined, or require additional information.
- Exercise underwriting authority within established limits while ensuring decisions align with company guidelines and overall risk tolerance.
- Communicate effectively with agents, policyholders, third-party administrators, and internal departments to resolve underwriting issues and facilitate timely case processing.
- Apply underwriting manuals, guidelines, and MIB information to accurately assess medical and financial risks.
- Coordinate with reinsurance partners by referring cases that exceed treaty limits and managing the approval process.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations and assist with internal audits and regulatory requirements.
- Support the ongoing maintenance and enhancement of underwriting guidelines, procedures, and departmental best practices.
- Collaborate with executive leadership and the Chief Underwriter on international business initiatives, policy services, premium administration, accounting matters, and claims-related activities.
- Review underwriting appeals, contestable claims, and cases involving potential misrepresentation.
- Participate in strategic initiatives, cross-functional projects, and continuous improvement efforts designed to enhance operational efficiency.
- Stay informed on industry trends, regulatory developments, and emerging underwriting practices to support organizational growth and excellence.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of life insurance underwriting experience with strong expertise in both medical and financial underwriting.
- Comprehensive understanding of life insurance underwriting principles, risk assessment methodologies, and sound underwriting judgment.
- Ability to work independently and make well-reasoned underwriting decisions with minimal supervision.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and attention-to-detail skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build effective relationships with agents, customers, reinsurers, and internal stakeholders.
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Health Sciences, or a related field preferred; equivalent industry experience will also be considered.
- Experience with policy administration systems and life insurance operations is advantageous.
- Professional designations such as FALU or FLMI are preferred.
- Experience with reinsurance platforms, KY Policy Administration System (KY PAS), or EKG certification is a plus.
- Bilingual Spanish/English skills are desirable but not required.
- Adaptable, collaborative, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where responsibilities span multiple functional areas and strategic initiatives.
