Join Us as a Senior Underwriter/Specialist, Contract Surety

The Opportunity

Working closely with business leaders and your peers, we are looking for a Sr. UW/Specialist, Contract Surety Solutions (depending on experience). Reporting to the VP Surety, Western Region, you will be helping to build and manage the surety business in Western Canada, through working collaboratively with the Tokio Marine Canada Surety unit.

What You'll Be Doing

Underwriting
    • Evaluate new risks through thorough analysis to determine acceptability and pricing.
    • Analyze financial statements, capacity, collateral and character of new surety opportunities.
    • Analyze and review projects, approving within given authority, or recommending approval or denial of surety bonds.
    • Conducting ongoing review and management of surety portfolio, ensuring accounts are up to date with action items being followed up.
    • Work with surety team with suggestions for improving systems and processes, with focus on continued efficiencies.
    • Help assist underwriting efforts across country where needed.
    • Support marketing, legal and claims services when required.


Strategy, Broker Management and Brand promotion
    • Build and manage select broker relationships.
    • Working with surety team in building and implementing broker strategy.
    • Promoting the Tokio Marine Canada brand, working closely with various business units including ProFin and Commercial Insurance.
    • Travel to various regions on a regular basis. Participate in various broker and industry events as required.

You are an experienced Contract Surety underwriter. You are a team player with a positive attitude who thrives in a consensus culture with an emphasis on collaboration. You are a self-starter who is excited by the opportunity to jump right in and can come up to speed quickly. You are comfortable working on a lean team and are not afraid to roll up your sleeves and do the work that needs to be done.

You bring:

  • The ideal combination of education and experience including:
    • University Bachelor's Degree, Business or related preferred.
    • Minimum 4 years of experience in Contract Surety.
  • The ability to partner with our staff within different lines of business.
  • A high level of organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • A proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines, driving for results.
  • Thought leadership and can innovate solutions quickly.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working closely with others and enjoy an atmosphere of cross-collaboration.
  • The ability to thrive in a fast paced and changing environment and be comfortable with ambiguity.
  • Superb customer service skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Teams, and Outlook).
  • Bilingual (English/French) preferred but not required.

We work in a hybrid model, and you should expect to split your time between working in the office and working remotely, with flexibility based on the role and the business needs. We currently have an office in downtown Toronto and will eventually be establishing offices in other provinces.
