Position PurposeProvides highly specialized electronics, instrumentation, control systems, computer interface, repair, calibration, design, fabrication and technical consultation services for teaching and research laboratory environments. Supports complex scientific instrumentation, custom-built apparatus, aging or obsolete systems, and equipment for which commercial service is unavailable, impractical, significantly delayed or not cost-effective.
The work is performed with minimum supervision under general guidelines and requires broad applied knowledge of electronics, scientific instrumentation, laboratory operations, safety requirements, and computer-controlled systems. Duties include diagnosing and repairing equipment, designing and integrating custom electronic and computer interfaces, supporting automation and data acquisition, providing CSA-related inspection and safety support, advising on component selection, and helping maintain continuity of teaching and research operations.
In this role, your responsibilities will include:- Electronics Technical Support: Inspects, diagnoses, troubleshoots, calibrates, modifies and repairs laboratory and audiovisual equipment, including specialized scientific instrumentation, aging or obsolete systems, high-value research equipment and non-standard or non-CSA-compliant equipment, to restore functionality and minimize operational downtime.
- Component-Level Repair and Refurbishment: Performs fault finding and repair at the component level, identifies failed parts, recommends or sources specialized electronic and mechanical components, refurbishes equipment, where feasible, and extends equipment life to avoid unnecessary replacement.
- Design and Fabrication: Designs, fabricates, installs and integrates custom electronic circuits, control panels, power supplies, instrumentation, and application-specific apparatus laboratory operations, including data acquisition systems, furnaces, pumps, autotesters, extraction or preparation lines and other specialized devices.
- Client Support and Training: Collaborates with researchers, instructors, laboratory staff, technical teams, teaching assistants and students to develop, implement and maintain practical, cost-effective technical solutions. Provides demonstrations, guidance, and knowledge transfer to improve user proficiency and internal technical capacity.
- Interface Design, Automation and Programming: Develops, modifies, tests and troubleshoots LabVIEW programs and other control software for automation, monitoring, sequence control, data acquisition, instrument-computer interfaces and continued operation of custom or manufacturer-obsolete systems.
- Equipment Safety and Technical Compliance: Assists with CSA-related inspection, validation, modification and safety compliance activities for custom-built, modified or locally assembled equipment, including laboratory systems, control assemblies and specialized computer configurations. Promotes safe operation and responsible use of equipment by students, staff and researchers.
- Technical Consultation: Provides advice on equipment design, technical feasibility, component selection, parts sourcing, and practical solutions for non-standard scientific and instructional applications.
- Inventory, Documentation and Records: Maintains parts information and inventory records for equipment, components and custom-built systems to support continuity of service and future maintenance.
- Data Security: Responsible for ensuring confidentiality, security and accessibility of institutional data. The incumbent complies with and promotes controls put in place to protect and secure data and exhibits due diligence in following established information security and privacy policies and related standards.
What you will bring:- College diploma in electronics technology, engineering technology, instrumentation, computer systems, physics, chemistry or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum 3 years of experience providing electronics, instrumentation, computer interface, repair, design or technical support in a teaching, research, scientific or laboratory environment.
- Knowledge of analog and digital electronics, circuit design, component-level diagnostics, power supplies, sensors, control systems and data acquisition.
- Knowledge of electronic test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, function generators, logic analyzers and related diagnostic tools.
- Knowledge of laboratory tools, scientific equipment, specialized instrumentation and their safe operation in teaching and research environments.
- Knowledge of health and safety requirements, CSA-related inspection practices, electrical safety principles and University policies related to laboratory equipment and usage.
- Experience designing, assembling, integrating, testing, repairing and modifying special-purpose laboratory equipment, electronic circuits, control panels and instrumentation.
- Experience developing, modifying or troubleshooting LabVIEW or other software used for instrument control, automation, monitoring, sequence control or data acquisition.
- Ability to diagnose complex technical problems, evaluate repair versus replacement options and develop practical, cost-effective solutions where vendor support is limited, delayed or unavailable.
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to researchers, instructors, laboratory staff, students, suppliers and technical collaborators.
- Ability to prioritize work, manage competing service needs, document technical work and maintain continuity of support for critical teaching and research activities.
- Bilingualism - French and English (spoken and written).
