The Senior Supplier Development Engineer (SDE) will be responsible for developing, supporting, and maintaining new and existing program projects through direct support of production operations, root cause/corrective action investigation, and active involvement with assigned suppliers to optimize suppliers' processes for efficiency, quality, and productivity.


This is a full-time position requiring flexibility to travel up to 30%, including short-notice travel in support of supplier escalations and continuity-related activities.

Essential Functions:

The Senior SDE will have project responsibilities across all Mercury Marine purchased commodities. He or she will support the design review and development of new and existing components to ensure suppliers meet the quoted capacity and capability requirements.

  • Oversee supplier quality processes for casting, machining, and internal engine components.
  • Develop and implement quality control procedures to ensure compliance with industry standards.
  • The Sr. SDE will investigate, evaluate, and resolve supplier quality problems by conducting defect investigations, analyzing defect trends, and leading continuous improvement projects.
  • Lead and facilitate quality solutions for urgent shop floor and customer issues, focusing on permanent corrective actions and preventing recurrences through implementing systemic corrective actions.
  • Working with purchasing and quality organizations to monitor current supplier performance, including impact, quality, delivery, and cost, and generate/issue monthly individual supplier performance scorecards.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to resolve quality issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Monitor and analyze supplier performance metrics to drive continuous improvement.
  • Lead cross-functional teams to address quality issues and implement quality improvement initiatives.
  • Assist supplier in advancing product quality efforts in coordination with Engineering/Design and program management through the launch of new product programs to assure adherence to specification.
  • Assist with the development of PPAP documentation (dimensional verification requirements, process flow charts, control plans, FMEAs, MSA and material analysis) as required by the Quality Management System.
  • Provide guidance and support to suppliers to ensure product quality and on-time delivery.
  • Conduct supplier training programs to enhance quality awareness and performance.
  • Stay up to date on industry trends and best practices in casting, machining, and quality assurance of internal engine components.
  • Drive a culture of quality excellence and continuous improvement within the supplier network.
  • Drive supplier's improvement projects in quality, delivery, and cost.   
  • Conduct suppliers (new suppliers selection, process, and launch readiness) audits at the suppliers.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Quality, or a related technical discipline required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in engineering and quality/supplier quality.
  • Strong problem-solving experience and tools.
  • Working knowledge of APQP, including design reviews, PPAP, Process control plan, FMEA
  • Working knowledge of DOE, SPC, GD&T, corrective action processes; ability to interpret and understand complex drawings.
  • Understanding of 3D CAD modeling software and mold flow software.
  • Experience with failure analysis using advanced techniques.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on delivering high-quality results.
  • Demonstrated leadership in driving successful project outcomes.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic team environment.
  • Proven experience working directly with suppliers for product development and problem solving
  • Experience in supporting product and process development through the product lifecycle and associated assets.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use and application of tools such as process FMEA, control strategies, modeling and simulation software, statistical methods, problem-solving, materials science, and design of experiments (DOE)
  •  Strong aptitude and understanding of plastics' capabilities and the methods needed to measure, test, and qualify components made of these materials.
  • Ability to provide solutions that reflect an understanding of business objectives and cost implications.
  • Direct experience or advanced training applicable to the processing of thermoplastics and/or extruded materials in a production environment
  • Experience with supply chain/Procurement, APQP/PPAP

Business Travel Expectations

This position requires domestic and international travel including occasional overnight travel, up to 30%+.

The hiring range for this position is $86,500 to $126,800 annually. The actual base pay offered will vary based on multiple factors including job-related knowledge/skills, relevant experience, business needs, and geographic location. Compensation decisions are dependent upon the specifics of the candidate’s qualifications and the business context.

In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus.
