Job Description
Your new role
As our new Senior Substation Engineer, you will be the technical anchor and subject matter expert for medium and high voltage substation design projects across a diverse and growing client base. You will lead engineering efforts from early concept and feasibility through detailed design and construction support, working closely with project managers, clients, and multidisciplinary design teams.
Your role will combine hands-on engineering with mentorship and technical leadership, helping to elevate the quality of our substation practice while delivering on a pipeline of challenging, high-profile projects.
Your key responsibilities will be:
• Lead and perform electrical engineering design for medium and high voltage substation projects, including equipment specification and selection, single-line development, protection and control design, and layout optimization
• Develop and review technical reports, engineering specifications, calculations, and design packages for substation facilities
• Perform and review electrical engineering calculations, including short circuit analysis, overcurrent protection coordination, and arc flash studies using industry-standard software
• Develop substation relay settings and protection schemes, ensuring compliance with applicable utility and interconnection requirements
• Provide engineering support during construction, including shop drawing review, RFI responses, site inspections, and punch list development
• Serve as technical reviewer and quality lead for work products developed by other engineers, ensuring compliance with NEC, NESC, ANSI/IEEE, and applicable utility standards
• Contribute to the on-going development of substations standards to improve the efficiency of future projects
• Mentor and develop early- and mid-career engineers, delegating appropriately and supporting their professional growth
• Support preparation of engineering proposals and fee estimates, contributing technical depth to business development efforts
• Coordinate with civil, structural, and protection and control disciplines to ensure integrated, constructible designs

These include:
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology; Master's degree a plus
• 8+ years of progressive experience in substation engineering and design, with demonstrated ability to lead technical efforts on complex projects
• Strong working knowledge of medium and high voltage equipment, substation layout, protection and control systems, and applicable industry codes and standards (NEC, NESC, ANSI/IEEE)
• Proficiency in engineering calculation software for short circuit, protection coordination, and arc flash analysis (such as ETAP, SKM, or EasyPower)
• Experience with Autodesk AutoCAD, Revit MEP, or Microstation for substation design and documentation
• Professional Engineering (PE) license, or active pursuit of licensure, is strongly preferred
• Strong communication and client-facing skills, with the ability to explain technical positions clearly to varied audiences
• Experience with utility interconnection requirements and standards is a plus
• Substation Protection Engineering or Substation Control and Integration experience is highly valued

Salary Transparency
At Ramboll, we are committed to fair and transparent compensation practices that support our people and our purpose of creating sustainable societies. The anticipated base salary range for this position is $95,000 to $140,000 per year. This range reflects the compensation we reasonably expect to offer at the time of posting. Actual compensation will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and internal equity. Because we operate across multiple U.S. markets, pay may differ depending on the cost of labor in specific locations. In addition to base salary, this position may be eligible for bonus, overtime or other forms of compensation and we offer a comprehensive benefits package that supports well-being, professional development, and work-life balance.
