Job Description

Position Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Structural Engineer - Mining & Industrial to join our team for our Canadian mine infrastructure team.

The successful candidate will leverage their expertise in civil/structural engineering to deliver practical solutions that enhance the performance, reliability, and safety of our clients' mining-related infrastructure. This role serves as a centralized inspection and asset integrity specialist. You will act as the tip of the spear for remote field execution, undertaking visual structural condition assessments at active underground/open pit mines, process plants, and critical water/wastewater facilities (such as water retaining walls, treatment plants, and reservoirs).

Additionally, the candidate will work closely with clients, mentor junior staff, and support strategic initiatives to expand our market presence in the mining sector.

Key Responsibilities

Asset Management & Field Inspections:
  • Execute hands-on visual structural condition assessments across a diverse portfolio, including remote mining environments, and critical water infrastructure (e.g., retaining walls, clarifiers, pump stations, and reservoirs).
  • Assess elevated walkways, ladders, and platforms against specific client and regulatory standards.
  • Verify load paths, corrosion, concrete degradation, deformation, weld conditions, and anchorage integrity during site inspections.
  • Analyze field findings to assign severity classifications in alignment with structural priority systems.
  • Create comprehensive field inspection reports using approved templates and capture precise deficiency data via annotated redline drawings and high-resolution photos.
  • Immediately escalate any imminent risk conditions to the client and internal project managers.

Engineering Response & Remediation:
  • Prepare detailed structural response actions, repair plans, and engineering assessments based on inspection findings for both heavy industrial and water-retaining structures.
  • Provide engineering solutions to extend the lifespan of existing facilities, including troubleshooting structural deterioration and implementing ground-improvement coordination.
  • Write clear, comprehensive construction specifications for structural remediation and brownfield integration.

Project Delivery:
  • Lead and manage structural engineering tasks across all project phases, from initial scoping and feasibility studies to detailed design, procurement, and commissioning.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in compliance with client and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct site visits to assess existing systems, gather data, and provide hands-on support during project execution in underground and surface environments.
  • Supervise, mentor, and review the technical work of junior engineers and EITs supporting field data collection.

Client and Stakeholder Collaboration:
  • Work closely with clients to understand their operational needs and develop tailored engineering solutions for mining and industrial operations.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, including mechanical, electrical, and civil engineers, to ensure seamless project integration.

Business Development:
  • Foster and maintain strong relationships with clients, serving as a trusted advisor for their structural needs.

Compliance and Safety:
  • Ensure all condition assessments and document retention practices meet the minimum expectations of EGBC or other provincial regulatory bodies.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement safety measures in all project phases, focusing on the unique challenges of various mining environments, such as hazardous areas, gas monitoring, and emergency egress systems.

Innovation and Continuous Improvement:
  • Stay updated with the latest technologies, trends, and best practices in structural engineering and underground mining operations.
  • Drive innovation by identifying and implementing new tools, methods, or approaches to improve project outcomes.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering (or equivalent).
  • 6+ years of structural engineering experience, with a heavy emphasis on asset management, structural condition assessments, and brownfield remediation.
  • Demonstrated physical ability and willingness to perform hands-on field inspections in challenging environments, ranging from remote underground mines to active water treatment facilities.
  • Expert-level knowledge of Canadian structural design codes (CSA S16 for structural steel and CSA A23.3 for concrete).
  • Access to a vehicle, a valid driver's license, and a clean driver's record are required for this position.

Preferred Skills:
  • 10+ years of dedicated structural inspection and remediation experience.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in British Columbia, Alberta, or Saskatchewan (or eligible for registration within 6 months).
  • Specific expertise in assessing and designing water-retaining structures in accordance with relevant codes (e.g., ACI 350 or equivalent standards).
  • Proficiency in structural design and analysis software such as STAAD Pro, SAP2000, or ETABS.
  • Familiarity with drafting and modeling software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and Navisworks.
  • Familiarity with non-destructive testing (NDT) oversight and specifying advanced concrete/steel testing protocols.
  • Demonstrated success in supporting business development, including client relationship management and proposal preparation.
