As a
Senior Software Engineer within Optum Technology, you will drive the design, development, and modernization of scalable enterprise applications supporting high-throughput healthcare and pharmacy benefit management (PBM) transaction systems. Working within an Agile environment, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to build cloud-native microservices, event-driven architectures, and secure RESTful APIs. In this role, you will leverage enterprise-approved AI platforms and modern development tools to boost engineering productivity, deliver high-quality solutions, and advance our cloud modernization roadmap.

Primary Responsibilities:- Design, develop, test, deploy, and support scalable microservices, cloud-native applications, and event-driven architectures using Java, Spring Boot, Docker, and Kubernetes across the full software development lifecycle
- Implement secure RESTful APIs, relational database solutions, messaging systems (e.g., Kafka or JMS), and CI/CD pipelines following architectural standards, Domain-Driven Design (DDD), and DevSecOps best practices
- Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered solutions to address complex business challenges with an emphasis on responsible use of AI
- Leverage enterprise-approved AI tools and technologies (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot) to streamline workflows, automate tasks, improve code quality, and enhance engineering delivery efficiency
- Evaluate emerging technology and AI trends to inform solution design, architectural standards, and strategic system modernization
- Monitor application health, perform root cause analysis, and troubleshoot issues across environments using observability tools (e.g., Splunk, Dynatrace, Grafana) to ensure high availability for mission-critical systems
- Collaborate within Agile/Scrum teams with product owners and architects, mentor junior engineers, and promote a culture of engineering excellence and continuous improvement
- Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered solutions to address complex business challenges with emphasis on responsible use of AI

Required Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology OR 4+ years of software development experience in lieu of a degree
- 6+ years of hands-on software engineering experience developing enterprise applications using Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and microservices architectures
- 4+ years of experience with event-driven architectures and messaging platforms such as Kafka or JMS
- 4+ years of experience utilizing enterprise monitoring and observability platforms (e.g., Dynatrace, Splunk, Grafana) for application health and performance analysis
- 3+ years of experience developing and deploying cloud-native applications on public cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP) utilizing Docker and Kubernetes
- 3+ years of experience with relational database technologies, data modeling concepts, and Agile/Scrum development methodologies
- 2+ years of experience utilizing AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot) to enhance coding productivity, test automation, and software delivery efficiency
Preferred Qualifications:- Experience in healthcare, pharmacy benefit management (PBM), claims processing, or real-time transaction processing systems
- Experience with healthcare industry integration standards such as NCPDP or HIPAA
- Experience building and supporting high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems utilizing architectural resiliency patterns
- Experience implementing AI-assisted software development and automation practices across engineering teams
- Proven experience leading technical design discussions, mentoring engineers, and driving engineering best practices

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $91,700 - $163,700 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
