Position OverviewAs a Senior Software Engineer on the Testing Tools team, you will own the architecture and reliability of the automation frameworks and testing infrastructure that give ID.me engineering teams the confidence to ship quickly and safely. You'll design and build tooling for functional, end-to-end, and security-focused test automation, extend testing coverage into production through canary releases and progressive delivery, and champion AI-assisted testing practices across the engineering organization. You'll work closely with engineering, product, and security teams to raise the bar on quality and resilience for a platform that verifies the identity of millions of users.
Key Responsibilities- Design, build, and maintain automation frameworks (Playwright, Python, Jest, API automation) that provide comprehensive, reliable test coverage across ID.me's services.
- Develop end-to-end and integration testing strategies for complex, asynchronous, event-driven, and eventually-consistent systems, including workflow orchestration platforms such as Temporal.
- Build and champion testing-in-production practices - canary deployments, progressive/phased rollouts, synthetic monitoring, and automated rollback triggers - to validate real-world behavior safely before full release.
- Own security-focused test automation covering authentication/authorization flows (OAuth 2.0, OIDC), RBAC/ReBAC, secrets management, and tenant isolation.
- Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions) to give teams fast, reliable feedback.
- Apply AI tools to accelerate test authoring, test plan generation, and code review - modeling AI-first engineering practices for the team and helping less-technical stakeholders adopt AI safely.
- Partner with development teams as a testing strategist, advising on testable code structure, coverage gaps, and quality checks throughout the development lifecycle.
- Debug and root-cause issues across frontend, backend, APIs, and distributed services, and drive fixes to closure.
- Define and track reliability metrics (e.g., time to detect, time to remediate) for the systems you test.
Minimum Qualifications- 8+ years of experience (or equivalent: 6+ years with a Master's degree, or a PhD with 3+ years) as a software engineer in modern web applications and distributed systems.
- Proficiency in Python/TypeScript/JavaScript.
- Hands-on experience with Playwright, Jest, and API automation.
- Experience testing REST APIs, microservices, and distributed architectures.
- Strong understanding of OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect (OIDC), and authentication/authorization flows.
- Experience testing asynchronous, event-driven, and eventually consistent systems, including workflow orchestration platforms such as Temporal (or similar).
- Strong understanding of security testing, including authentication, authorization, RBAC/ReBAC, secrets management, tenant isolation, and least-privilege access.
- Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, ArgoCD).
- Experience with testing-in-production techniques such as canary releases, progressive/phased rollouts, and automated rollback.
- Strong debugging and root cause analysis skills across frontend, backend, APIs, and distributed services.
- Ability to design automation strategies for complex end-to-end workflows, integrations, and security scenarios.
- Experience using and building Agentic tools (e.g., for test generation, code review, and drafting test plans) to accelerate and scale testing work.
- Experience testing developer platforms, identity platforms, IAM, or enterprise B2B SaaS products.
Preferred QualificationsIdentity & Access Management- Experience with SAML 2.0 federation.
- Experience with enterprise identity providers such as Okta, Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD), Auth0, or Ping Identity.
- Experience with SCIM 2.0 provisioning and lifecycle management.
- Experience with Relationship-Based Access Control (ReBAC) using Google Zanzibar, SpiceDB (Authzed), or similar authorization systems.
- Experience testing fine-grained authorization, delegated administration, and multi-tenant permission models.
Identity Verification & Trust- Understanding of digital identity and identity proofing concepts..
- Experience testing identity verification (IDV), document verification, biometric verification, or KYC workflows.
- Experience validating PII handling, privacy controls, consent, data retention, and compliance requirements.
Platform & Engineering- Familiarity with Java/Spring Boot and/or Ruby on Rails.
- Experience with contract testing (e.g., Pact).
- Performance and load testing (e.g., Locust, k6, Gatling).
- Experience with GCP, Docker, and Kubernetes.
- Familiarity with observability tools (logs, metrics, tracing) for debugging distributed systems.
- Knowledge of chaos engineering and performance tuning to build resilient services.
