Full Job Description
Bevi is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for Bevi's backend platform. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering software solutions that facilitate the stable operation of Bevi's fleet of smart water machines and modernize Bevi's backend systems at the pace of a high-growth startup for scale. You will collaborate closely with other software engineers on system design and implementation. This role invites seasoned engineers to exercise their deep expertise by driving critical feature development and providing mentorship to junior teammates.

The ability to be in the office 2+ days per week in our Boston (Charlestown) headquarters is strongly preferred for this position.
Your Day to Day

  • Design, build, optimize, and maintain Bevi's backend platform and services using Java and Kotlin to facilitate consistently reliable operation, remote management, and scalability.
  • Manage backend software deployments to production, maintain service uptime, and monitor service health post-rollout.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and improve service and cloud system performance with logs and metrics.
  • Ensure the performance, quality, and responsiveness of Bevi's web and machine user interfaces by developing and maintaining well-designed and documented APIs.
  • Develop and expand a suite of services that process telemetry events/datapoints from Bevi machines and provide critical data to our R&D, support technicians, and fleet managers.
  • Work efficiently to deliver consistent results as part of an agile software development team, ensuring your code is clean, reliable, and easy to maintain.
  • Participate in and guide architectural discussions, technical design direction, and app optimization strategies with an eye on metric-driven results.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product management and hardware teams, to define, design, and ship new features as well as contribute significantly to software development planning.
  • Review code and regularly share input and advice to peers to ensure high code quality and maintain best practices across the team. Champion unit/integration testing and test-driven development practices.
  • Mentor other software engineers in architectural design decisions, technical direction, and application creation strategies.
  • Own the relationship and interaction with cloud providers, software vendors, or other third-party services integrated with Bevi's backend infrastructure to support consistent system performance and scalability.
  • Help triage, identify, and resolve complex issues and bugs that surface in Bevi's backend services and UIs for reliable system operation on Bevi machines and to reduce impact to customers.
  • Actively participate in Agile/Scrum development processes, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives.


Requirements

  • A BS in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or other related field, or the equivalent in related software development experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in backend Java/Kotlin development. Experience working in and contributing to a microservice architecture is a plus.
  • Strong expertise with database design and development in Postgres or a similar database management system. Experience with time series databases like Influx or TimescaleDB is a strong plus.
  • Experience deploying and maintaining applications on cloud platforms.
  • Strong expertise in API design. Experience in GraphQL is highly preferred.
  • Additional ability for full-stack development in modern frameworks like Typescript and React is a strong plus.
  • Proficiency in monitoring, troubleshooting, and improving system performance through logging and metrics.
  • Experience with unit/integration testing and test-driven development.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Git and CI/CD pipelines.
  • The ability to analyze complex technical issues, devise innovative solutions, and implement effective strategies to enhance application performance and stability.
  • A deep working knowledge of the application development landscape, architectures, trends, and emerging technologies.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills that allow you to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • A self-starter approach and sense of ownership of the projects that you work on with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced work environment.

The posted compensation range reflects the salary* for this position. Some roles may be eligible for a commission plan or a bonus incentive. About Bevi

Matthew Griswold Bevin is an American businessman and politician who served as the 62nd Governor of Kentucky, from 2015 to 2019. He was the third Republican elected Kentucky governor since World War II, after Ernie Fletcher and Louie Nunn. Born in Denver, Colorado, and raised in Shelburne, New Hampshire, Bevin earned a bachelor's degree at Washington and Lee University in 1989, then served four years of active duty in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of captain. He became wealthy in the investment business and moved to Louisville, Kentucky, in 1999. He was president of Bevin Brothers Manufacturing Company, one of the last remaining American bell foundries. In 2013, Bevin announced he would challenge Kentucky's senior U.S. Senator, then-Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, in the 2014 Republican primary. Although Bevin gained the support of various groups aligned with the Tea Party Movement, McConnell attacked him repeatedly for inconsistencies in his public statements and policy positions and defeated him by almost 25 percentage points. After announcing he would seek the governorship in 2015, Bevin emerged from a four-way Republican primary, besting his nearest competitor by 83 votes.
