Description

The sleep technologist is to perform and evaluate routine and specialized overnight polysomnograms (PSGs), Multiple Sleep Latency Tests (MSLTs), and ensure patient safety. Major duties include calibrating equipment, attaching sensors to patients, performing bio-calibration, monitoring laboratory equipment, observing patients while they sleep, make decisions to initiate Bi/CPAP titration or other treatment should patients meet lab criteria, and score polysomnographic recordings on request. Occasionally work days to perform MSLTs, infant and pediatric recordings, scoring of records, daytime studies, and other functions as requested by the lab manager. Responsible to work at all UCLA Sleep Lab locations as needed for Laboratory operations.

The sleep technologist reports to the Lab Manager and Supervisor, but may also receive instruction from Medical Director, staff physicians, or other designated personnel. The technologist should follow Laboratory protocols and policies for emergency situations as well as policies and procedures for reporting of non-emergency situations related to facilities, medical record, engineering, etc. The Technologist will work independently within their scope of practice and as a team member to ensure the smooth operation of the Sleep Disorders Center.
