Full Job Description
Senior Safety Partner I, Construction
ICON is looking for a Senior Safety Partner to ICON's construction organization to lead field and project-level safety across a portfolio that spans residential, commercial, and military construction projects, including work conducted on military installations. This role requires an individual who can operate autonomously as a strategic advisor to project leadership, self-direct across complex project environments, and build safety programs that are both rigorous and practical. This role is accountable for establishing and maintaining Accident Prevention Plans (APPs) for both military construction (MILCON) and commercial programs, driving regulatory compliance, and embedding a proactive safety culture at every level of construction operations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Partnership
• Serve as dedicated safety partner and first point of contact to ICON's construction business unit, advising leadership, measuring outcomes, and escalating to the EHS Manager as needed.
• Represent the EHS function in project planning and pre-deployment meetings and activities.
Program & APP Development
• Establish both business unit and project-specific safety programs from the ground up, tailoring controls to site conditions, scope, and workforce composition.
• Drive the development and implementation of Accident Prevention Plans (APPs) for MILCON projects on military installations, in compliance with EM 385-1-1.
• Develop and maintain commercial APPs aligned with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
• Identify regulatory gaps and proactively drive corrective action before inspections or incidents surface them.
Field Operations & Compliance
• Conduct regular site inspections across civil and vertical construction operations (residential, commercial, and military), identifying hazardous conditions and driving abatement to closure.
• Monitor subcontractor safety program compliance; hold subs accountable to ICON standards without exception.
• Lead site-specific new hire safety orientations and ensure ongoing safety training is documented and current.
• Attend and contribute to safety committee meetings.
Incident Management
• Lead field-level incident investigations; document findings, determine root cause, and develop corrective actions with traceability, partnering with the HR Partner as appropriate.
• Support injured workers by coordinating with employees, managers, and Human Resources to support timely return-to-work outcomes.
• Maintain complete, audit-ready records of all incidents, near-misses, and corrective action closures.
Trend Analysis & Reporting
• Utilize ICON's safety management systems to track findings, abatement status, and closure, maintaining full audit readiness.
• Perform trend analysis across projects to surface systemic issues and recommend data-backed interventions to the EHS Manager and business unit leadership.
• Prepare safety performance summaries for leadership.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• 7+ years of construction industry safety experience, with demonstrated experience across civil and/or vertical construction.
• Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, or similarly related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
• Working knowledge of EM 385-1-1, or ability and commitment to obtain qualification within 60 days of hire.
• Deep understanding of OSHA construction standards (29 CFR 1926) and applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations.
• Proven ability to develop Accident Prevention Plans (APPs) for complex construction environments.
• Demonstrated ability to operate independently, self-manage across multiple active projects, and make sound safety decisions without requiring escalation for routine matters.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to write regulatory-quality documentation and communicate clearly with field crews, project leadership, and clients.
• Valid, unrestricted driver's license.
PREFERRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
• Prior experience with MILCON projects and work conducted on military installations.
• Familiarity with controlled insurance programs (OCIP/CCIP).
• CSP, CHST, or equivalent professional certification.
• Experience working in technology-forward or non-traditional construction environments.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
• Fieldwork is the core of this role; expect regular time on active construction sites across residential, commercial, and military construction programs.
• Military construction work is conducted on U.S. military installations and requires ability to pass applicable background and access requirements.
• This role will have up to 50% travel between project sites.
