Full Job Description
Role Overview:
This Senior Software Engineer role focuses on building and automating a federated GraphQL data layer that powers large-scale, consumer-facing web experiences. The core involves a Rust-based federation router and numerous Node/TypeScript subgraphs. The ideal candidate will engineer the path to production for this data layer, ensuring safe and efficient deployment by owning CI/CD pipelines and contributing directly to the Rust and Node code.
Key Responsibilities:
Engineer the router's path to production, designing, building, and owning CI/CD pipelines for the GraphQL router on Rio (or comparable platforms).
Ensure fast and reproducible router builds through Cargo workspace, dependency caching, incremental/parallel builds, artifact signing, versioning, and provenance.
Implement quality gates for latency-critical services, including unit/integration tests, performance benchmarks with regression detection, fuzzing, dependency/vulnerability scanning, and config validation.
Automate canary and staged rollouts with health- and SLO-based promotion, fast rollback, and zero-downtime updates across environments.
Write and maintain Rust code for router components such as custom plugins, coprocessors, auth, caching, telemetry, and query-governance features.
Build Node/TypeScript tooling and services, including coprocessors, CLIs, test harnesses, and internal developer tools.
Own schema delivery workflows, including automated composition, breaking-change/operation checks against real traffic, schema registry integration, and gated publishing for subgraphs.
Provide paved-path pipeline templates for partner teams to build, test, and ship Node subgraphs with minimal friction.
Measure and improve build times, pipeline reliability, flaky-test rates, and lead time to production.
Partner with platform, infrastructure, and security teams on environment provisioning, secrets management, and compliance.
Required Skills:
Hands-on experience designing and owning CI/CD pipelines for production services (e.g., Rio, GitHub Actions, Buildkite, Jenkins, GitLab CI, Tekton, Argo).
Production experience writing Rust, with a working understanding of the Rust toolchain (Cargo workspaces, features, cross-compilation, build performance).
Strong Node.js / TypeScript skills for building services, tooling, and automation.
Solid experience with GraphQL APIs, including schema design, resolvers, and understanding schema change impacts.
Experience with containers and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) and deployment strategies (canary, blue/green, feature flags).
Comfort owning services in production, including observability, SLOs, and incident response.
Qualifications:
6+ years of software engineering experience, including significant time building and operating production backend or platform systems.
