Crescent Energy is seeking an experienced
Senior Regulatory Accountant, Severance Tax to join our Houston-based Accounting organization. This position will be responsible for preparing, analyzing, and supporting the Company's Texas oil and natural gas severance tax reporting, compliance, and accounting activities. The role will support monthly and annual tax filings, tax accruals, account reconciliations, audit responses, exemption administration, and related regulatory reporting requirements.
The ideal candidate will have at least
5 years of accounting experience, including at least 3 years of direct Texas severance tax experience, and a strong understanding of upstream oil and gas accounting processes. This role requires a collaborative professional who can effectively partner with Revenue Accounting, Production Reporting, Land, Operations, and Finance teams while contributing to process improvements, strengthening internal controls, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will possess strong knowledge of Texas severance tax regulations, production and ownership reporting concepts, and upstream oil and gas accounting practices.
Reporting StructureThis position reports to the Regulatory Accounting Manager.
Primary Responsibilities- Prepare and review Texas oil and natural gas severance tax filings to ensure timely and accurate reporting and payment obligations.
- Maintain compliance with applicable Texas severance tax laws, regulations, and reporting requirements.
- Prepare monthly severance tax accruals, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Analyze production, revenue, and ownership data utilized in tax calculations and reporting.
- Research and resolve filing discrepancies, reporting variances, and reconciliation issues.
- Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities related to severance tax accounting.
- Support Texas Comptroller audits and regulatory inquiries, including preparation of schedules and supporting documentation.
- Assist in the administration of severance tax exemptions, incentives, and reduced-rate programs, ensuring compliance with applicable requirements.
- Maintain documentation supporting tax filings, exemptions, audit requests, and regulatory compliance activities.
- Partner with Revenue Accounting, Production Reporting, Land, Operations, and Finance teams to ensure reporting accuracy and resolve tax-related issues.
- Support acquisition, divestiture, and integration activities that impact severance tax reporting and compliance.
- Identify opportunities to enhance processes, strengthen internal controls, automate activities, and improve the efficiency and scalability of the regulatory accounting function.
- Monitor regulatory developments and assist with implementation of process changes as necessary.
- Serve as a key resource for Texas severance tax matters and provide guidance to internal stakeholders regarding tax reporting requirements and regulatory compliance.
Education and Experience Requirements- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 5+ years of accounting experience in the upstream oil and gas industry, including at least 3 years of direct Texas severance tax experience.
- Strong knowledge of Texas oil and natural gas severance tax regulations and reporting requirements.
- Experience preparing severance tax filings, reconciliations, and audit support documentation.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
- Experience with upstream oil and gas accounting systems and ERP platforms required; SAP experience preferred.
Preferred Qualifications- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Accredited Petroleum Accountant (APA) designation a plus.
- Experience working with Texas Comptroller audits, severance tax exemptions, and incentive programs.
- Understanding of production reporting, revenue accounting, and ownership structures.
- Experience supporting acquisition, divestiture, and integration activities.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage recurring compliance and reporting responsibilities.
- Experience identifying and implementing process improvements and control enhancements.
