Full Job Description
About the role

The primary objective of the Senior Project Engineer, Energy Storage role is to provide technical expertise during the design and execution phase of energy storage projects to support our IPP customers. In this role you must apply advanced engineering techniques to design, develop, test, and evaluate multidisciplinary systems for seamless energy storage product integration across diverse projects. You will collaborate closely with customer engineering, project, and product teams, overseeing energy storage product due diligence, retrofitting, integration, and commissioning from project interconnection through Commercial Operation Date (COD).

As the primary technical interface between vendors, customers, and subcontractors, you will lead the interaction of these parties during project interconnection, design, construction and commissioning. To excel in this role, you must demonstrate expertise in engineering review, practical problem-solving, strategic planning, multi-party coordination, and optimizing engineering processes.

Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serve as a key technical expert in the integration of energy storage products into project designs, ensuring compliance with ISO, NERC, NFPA, and other relevant standards.
  • Review engineering deliverables (e.g., documentation, calculations, design sets, RFI responses) from multiple disciplines, and respond to RFIs and submittals.
  • Assess and mitigate project risks related to design, certification, testing, systems integration, and commissioning.
  • Collaborate with and possess a deep technical understanding of deliverables from battery/PCS/EMS vendors, ISOs, utilities, IPPs, EPCs, NRTLs, third-party QA/QC, and engineering consulting firms.
  • Lead and coordinate commissioning activities between various stakeholders for both utility-scale and DG-scale projects.
  • Provide technical mentorship and leadership to junior and mid-level Project Engineers, focusing on core competencies in system design and commissioning best practices.
  • Act as a subject matter expert, guiding technical decisions and troubleshooting complex design or field issues across the project life
  • Conduct detailed technical reviews of key contractual documents in support of customers' goals to validate technical scope, performance guarantees, and acceptance criteria.
  • Conduct product diligence and develop engineering tools integrated with Anza's platform to deliver high value quickly to platform users.
  • Support internal technical requests from Anza's Solutions Engineering team, to ensure Anza is properly representing energy storage products and architectures to our customers.

While no one individual will possess them all, the successful candidate will bring many of the following experiences, skills, and attributes:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
  • 5+ years of related experience in energy storage product design and integration, utility-scale energy storage facility design, construction, and commissioning.
  • 7+ years of related experience in power systems design, construction, commissioning, and field support.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant codes and standards (UL, NEC, NFPA, IEEE etc.). In particular, familiarity with Inverter-Based Resource (IBR) related standards is a plus (e.g., IEEE 2800, new NERC standards, etc.)
  • Experience working with fire departments, building departments, utilities, and ISO/RTOs.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and Excel. Experience with ETAP, PSSE, PSCAD, PSLF, and Python is a plus.
  • Experience with communication protocols (Modbus TCP/IP, DNP3, CAN, etc.) and tools (Wireshark).
  • Advanced degrees in Electrical Engineering focused on Power Systems, Renewable Energy, or Power Electronics are highly desirable.
