Full Job Description
Overview

We are seeking a full-time Senior Product Designer to join the Aviation Human Factors and Product Experience team at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. You will be part of a team designing user experiences for Garmin Pilot and the Pilotweb.garmin.com site. As part of this team, you will help users become the best version of themselves through effective training and coaching. You will help keep them safe by providing superior navigation, connectivity, and intuitive solutions. And you will get to tell your pilot friends "I worked on that!"

As part of your day-to-day responsibilities, you will be involved in every aspect of the feature development process, from wireframing the next great product innovation to tweaking pixels right before launch. You will be expected to utilize your full range of user experience design, interaction design and visual design skills. A strong ability to collaborate with others is also a must. You'll work closely with associates from various departments to research, prototype, design, present, and create highly usable interaction solutions.

Essential Functions
  • Perform as a design leader who guides design direction for multiple projects and takes responsibility for project planning to ensure timely project completion
  • Make substantial contributions to determining feasibility of project goals/objectives
  • Partner with team leads/management to determine feature vision, visualize and communicate it
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for a key feature or technology and communicate best practices for user experience for that feature
  • Research and provide solutions for problems that span multiple groups or disciplines
  • Provide feedback on designs in areas of expertise to team members
  • Lead conversations with partners and potential clients with respect to user experience design
  • Serve as a mentor to less experienced Product Designers (Product Designer 1 & 2)
  • Contribute to advanced design research for new products or markets by identifying research opportunities, creating effective protocols, and formulating solid solutions from research results
  • Provide input to product design plans and concept documents
  • Demonstrate understanding of business needs as they related to design
  • Independently determine general approach and specific solutions to technical problems
  • Stay up to date with the latest design trends, tools, and technologies and advocate for user-centric design principles and best practices
  • Communicate status of work clearly and provide visibility to supervisor
  • Exemplifies Garmin's Mission Statement and Quality Policy and proactively works to improve Garmin's image and culture

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Interactive Design, Human Factors, Visual Design or a degree with an equivalent curriculum that teaches user centered design principles AND a minimum of 5 years relevant work experience OR a minimum of 9 years equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule) with the ability to effectively apply learned knowledge
  • Proficient in UX software tools such as Figma and Sketch, as well as interactive prototyping tools
  • Proven track record with leading design direction for multiple projects, and ensuring effective project planning leads to timely completion of project goals/objectives
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Desired Qualifications
  • Excellent knowledge and passion for Garmin Products
  • Experience in graphics production, graphics editing technology, motion graphics, interactive design works and/or videography.
  • Software skills using Figma
  • Aviation experience and/or pilot's licens
