What Your Job Will Be LikeWe seek a motivated R&D staff member (job title: R&D S&E, Materials Science) to join the Materials Physics department and work at the interface of Physics, Materials Science, and Electrical Engineering. The successful candidate will be expected to develop original and independent research in emerging areas at the intersection of Physics, Materials Science, or Electrical Engineering ; collaborate with other researchers both within the department and across Sandia on materials development, micro- and nano-device fabrication, testing, and characterization; supervise the operations of a small cleanroom onsite; engage with Sandia's programs stakeholders; and coordinate external interactions with vendors and other fabrication facilities . The candidate will be expected to have significant and diverse experiences in the fabrication of novel nanoscale devices within cleanroom environments.
On any given day you may be called on to:
- Perform original and independent research in novel device fabrication and characterization
- Develop new fabrication methods for novel microelectronic devices
- Develop new programmatic directions for the utilization of the nanofabrication facilities
- Collaborate with other researchers on device development
- Grow research programs and respond to funding opportunities
- Coordinate maintenance, operations and safety in fabrication laboratories, and implement an investment strategy to re-capitalize equipment
- Educate and oversee the local nanofabrication community
- Interact with external vendors and fabrication facilities to expand capabilities
- Publish and present work at relevant conferences and in peer-reviewed scientific journals
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

About Our TeamThe Materials Physics department performs fundamental research on the structure and properties of materials to support programs in energy research, device physics, materials reliability, and national security. Specific activities include experimental and modeling studies of surface electronic structure and surface atomic structure and dynamics of metals, oxides, low dimensional semiconductors, and adsorbates; atomic-scale structure and composition analysis of metals, semiconductors, and composites; electrical and optical properties of low-dimensional semiconductors and optoelectronic devices; and the structural and electrochemical characterization of solid-state ionic materials. The Department supports internal and external sponsors and government agencies that seek solutions to problems of fundamental scientific inquiry, energy sustainability, and national defense.
Posting DurationThis posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.
Security ClearanceThis position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.
