OverviewConduct power system studies and analysis to meet regulatory compliance requirements for existing and future NERC and regional reliability standards. This role focuses on power system protection schemes and studies, ensuring protection coordination, and disturbance monitoring capability to adequately support the safety and reliability of the bulk electric system.
The successful candidate for this position has a strong background in power systems with emphasis in protection and control, including experience with industry standards and tools for power system protection. The successful candidate is familiar with protective functions commonly used for conventional and non-conventional generating units and can effectively utilize that knowledge and background in a demanding environment.
ResponsibilitiesHow you can make an impact:- Perform power system protection studies using software (e.g., ETAP, ASPEN OneLiner), including short-circuit analysis and protection coordination for transmission systems and generation facilities.
- Review and evaluate existing protection systems, relay settings, and coordination practices to identify potential issues and recommend improvements.
- Evaluate Digital Fault Recorder (DFR), SCADA, and substation monitoring systems to assess existing capabilities, configurations, and data recording functionality against regulatory requirement (e.g., NERC PRC-028 and ERCOT NOGRR255).
- Conduct gap assessments of clients' existing disturbance monitoring systems installed onsite (including DDR and FR capabilities,) and recommend improvements to meet applicable technical requirements.
- Support clients in NERC compliance activities, including NERC PRC-002, PRC-019, PRC-024, PRC-027, PRC-028, and other relevant standards.
- Prepare engineering calculations following established principles and methods, while managing assigned budget, schedule, and quality standards. Lead projects by delegating appropriate tasks to junior-level team members and coordinating team efforts for successful completion.
- Provide subject matter expertise and mentorship to junior-level engineers on protection engineering best practices.
- Develop and maintain process documentation, flow charts, working instructions, and other materials necessary for the continuity and success of the projects.
- Leads process improvement efforts, identifying opportunities to enhance organizational efficiency while maximizing team bandwidth and ensuring the quality and timeliness of client deliverables.
QualificationsBring your passion, here's what's needed:- Bachelor's (and higher) degree in Electric Engineering with focus on power system engineering.
- 4 - 5 years of experience in power system protection, engineering studies, or related consulting services.
- Strong understanding of power system protection principles, protective relays, short-circuit analysis, and protection coordination.
- Experience working with Inverter-based resources (IBRs) including solar, wind, and battery energy storage systems. Experience with conventional generation facilities is a plus.
- Familiarity with Digital Fault Recorders (DFRs), disturbance monitoring systems, SCADA, and substation communication systems.
- Experience with power system analysis and protection software such as ASPEN OneLiner, CAPE, ETAP, PSSE, PSCAD, SEL Quickset, and GE Enervista UR Setup.
- Experience working with SEL equipment, software, and/or developing programming files using SEL Quickset.
- General understanding of NERC reliability standards and their application to protection systems and maintenance.
- Strong analytical problem solving, technical writing and communication skills, with the ability to work independently, and to collaborate with clients and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
