What's the Role and What You'll DoHelp residents find their place in City of Mountain View life. You've built relationships, coordinated programs, and helped people get involved. Bring that experience to Mountain View, where you'll lead a multilingual team and help guide an established citywide Multicultural Engagement Program in the City Manager's Office. You'll have opportunities to enhance multilingual access to City services and programs, advise City departments on multicultural community engagement, and create programs that help residents understand their local government and take part in community life.
Your morning might begin with a City department preparing for a community meeting. They need a presentation translated, interpretation arranged, and help reaching residents who may not hear about the meeting through the usual channels.
You ask questions, organize the work, and coordinate with your team. You think about the language, the audience, and what will help people understand the information and feel comfortable participating in local democracy. You'll serve as the City's go-to advisor for questions about inclusivity, language access, multicultural outreach, and issues of importance to the City's multilingual community.
As Mountain View's Senior Outreach Coordinator, you'll bring that approach to the City's Multicultural Engagement Program: listening carefully, building relationships, and following through.
A team to lead. Relationships to grow. You'll supervise an experienced Community Outreach Specialist and eight hourly employees who support outreach in Spanish and Mandarin. The team brings different cultural perspectives and experiences to its work. You'll need curiosity, flexibility, and the ability to listen as you set priorities, assign tasks, and help employees succeed.
You'll also work with community Ambassadors, who are graduates of the City's Spanish and Chinese language civic leadership academies. A check-in through WhatsApp might lead to sharing a City update, gathering input on a survey, or organizing outreach for a neighborhood event.
These relationships take time. You'll earn trust by being responsive, respecting different perspectives, and doing what you say you'll do.
Programs that turn information into participation.During academy season, much of your attention will go toward helping residents understand local government and find ways to get involved. You'll coordinate department presentations, facilitate sessions, arrange locations, and keep participants and City staff informed.
On another day, you might be preparing for the City's annual Día de Muertos celebration, supporting a Lunar New Year event, or coordinating staff for a neighborhood ice cream social. You'll work through contracts, performers, volunteers, schedules, and the details that help an event come together.
Alongside those programs, you'll provide and oversee translations of news releases, web content, presentations, and other City documents. You'll coordinate interpretation at public meetings and support language access during Emergency Operations Center activations.
You'll manage the program budget, oversee event contracts, manage contracted interpretation services, and use the City's Language Access and Multicultural Community Engagement Policy to help departments plan their outreach.
Independence, with people you can turn to.You'll have discretion in organizing events, completing time-sensitive assignments, and directing hourly staff. As part of the City's Communications and Outreach Division, you'll attend weekly division meetings and individual meetings with your supervisor every two weeks, providing regular opportunities to discuss priorities, solve problems, and explore ideas.
Your first few months will include preparing for the spring Spanish Language Civic Leadership Academy and overseeing translation and interpretation requests. An experienced Community Outreach Specialist will help you learn the programs, City initiatives, and community.
The EssentialsWhat you'll bringYou're comfortable leading people, managing complex programs, and communicating across cultures. Your experience may come from local government, nonprofits, education, or another community-focused setting.
Minimum qualifications include a relevant bachelor's degree and three years of increasingly responsible professional experience in community outreach, public engagement, multilingual communications, or a related field, including coordinating complex programs.
You must be proficient in English and either Spanish or Mandarin, including writing, translation, and verbal interpretation. A language test will be required during the screening process for this recruitment.
Supervisory experience is preferred, and a translation and interpretation certificate is desired.
Are We a Match?A schedule that follows the communityExpect an average of one to two evenings each week and weekend work one to two times per month. Summer activities may require two weekends per month. The role also includes periodic holiday work and emergency public information response. There is an opportunity for hybrid work and some schedule flexibility around program needs.
Bring your language skills, leadership, and ability to build trust to Mountain View. Help residents access information, share their perspectives, and take part in the life of their city.
Good governance depends on people being able to participate. In 2026, Mountain View City Manager Kimbra McCarthy became the inaugural recipient of The national recognition celebrates ethical leadership, transparency, accountability, and effective governance-and the partnership between the City Council and City Manager.
In this role, you'll help put those principles into practice: making City information understandable across languages, helping residents participate in public meetings, and creating opportunities to learn how local government works.
Whether you're coordinating interpretation, guiding a civic leadership academy, or helping a department reach residents, your work will help people understand decisions, share their perspectives, and build relationships with their City.
