Senior Mechanical Designer | Detroit, MIIMEG is hiring a Senior Mechanical Designer in Detroit, Michigan. This role supports both technical leadership and project management tracks, leading design efforts on moderate to complex projects and supporting the delivery of larger, high-complexity work with limited support from senior staff.
You will work closely with engineers and consultants to provide project direction, engineering solutions, and advice to clients, while helping manage project budgets, mentor staff, and coordinate cross-functional teams to meet project goals and client expectations. The team supports industrial and manufacturing work with a strong building-systems focus, advancing high-performance, energy-efficient design aligned with MEP2050 and AIA2030.

What You'll DoTechnical Path- Lead design efforts for HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems on moderate to complex projects.
- Develop detailed designs, specifications, and calculations according to code requirements and firm standards.
- Perform site assessments and prepare detailed analyses and technical reports.
- Work directly with clients to gather requirements, communicate technical information, and build strong relationships.
- Review system designs, calculations, specifications, and correspondence during design, and apply quality control processes to meet firm, industry, and client standards.
- Provide technical training and mentoring, and assist with field issue resolution with limited support from senior staff.
- Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices, and contribute to research, development, and innovation efforts.
- Identify and mitigate safety risks associated with mechanical systems.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated solutions that meet project goals.
- Participate in project interviews and presentations.
ORProject Management Path- Coordinate, oversee, and manage projects ranging in size and complexity.
- Assist Project Executives and Client Executives with design scopes of work, fee calculations for proposal generation, and contract reviews.
- Create project schedules with milestone targets and deadlines.
- Serve as the point of contact for project teams and clients.
- Create monthly billings, submit financial information to Accounting in a timely manner, and update billing projections and estimated completion percentages monthly.
- Ensure design follows owner standards and requirements, firm standards, and code requirements, and that quality control processes, milestone deliverables, and construction technical support occur in a timely manner.
- Collaborate with design staff and coordinate project scheduling during all phases of design and construction, and schedule and lead progress meetings with documentation.
- Conduct construction site visits and provide documentation as needed or requested.
- Respond to and resolve client and construction concerns, manage change orders, and obtain appropriate approvals.
- Train, mentor, and motivate staff while building, maintaining, and developing client relationships.

Option A:
- Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent required
- 7 years of experience minimum required, 14 preferred, in the building design consulting industry
Option B:
- 11 years of experience minimum required, 14 preferred, in the building design consulting or construction industry
Skills and Abilities- Strong technical and analytical skills including proficiency of principles in thermodynamics, psychrometrics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics relating to mechanical design in HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems
- Ability to perform final quality control check in their area of expertise
