Position Overview

Kiewit is seeking a Senior Mechanical Designer to play a key role in the design and delivery of complex hydropower, dam, and hydraulic structure projects across North America.

As a key member of Kiewit's Hydropower, Dams, and Hydraulic Structures (HDH) team, you will contribute to the planning and constructable design of balance-of-plant mechanical systems for major infrastructure projects, including traditional and pumped-storage hydropower facilities.

You will collaborate closely with Design Engineers as well as other discipline teams (structural, electrical, hydrotechnical) to provide various design services to internal groups for the development of HDH projects.

Location

  • This position is based out of Oakville, ON or Burnaby, BC.
  • Remote or hybrid work arrangements may be considered.
  • Occasional travel will be required.


Responsibilities

Design Leadership
  • Support the mechanical systems design for HDH projects in coordination with the existing Kiewit design teams as needed (structural, electrical, etc.)
  • Lead the preparation of mechanical design deliverables, including drawings, lists and schedules in coordination with mechanical engineers.
  • Provide design input and advice based on experience and knowledge of industry best practices.
  • Support in the preparation and coordination HDH mechanical design packages


People, Collaboration & Mentorship
  • Collaborate closely with internal engineering teams, construction personnel, and external design partners.
  • Mentor and support the development of junior and intermediate designers through technical guidance and knowledge sharing.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive team environment focused on quality, safety, and continuous improvement.


Business & Practice Development
  • Support business development efforts, including pursuits and technical proposals.
  • Contribute to the growth and evolution of the HDH practice through strategic initiatives, lessons learned, and continuous improvement.
  • Interest in improving design efficiency through new tools and workflows (including AI-enabled solutions).


Quality & Safety
  • Lead by example in promoting a strong culture of safety, quality, and accountability.
  • Support implementation and continuous improvement of the design quality management system.


Qualifications

Required
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in the design of balance-of-plant mechanical systems with experience in Hydropower considered an asset. The ideal candidate will have experience in the design of:
    • Piping layouts and supports
    • HVAC duct work and ancillaries
    • Drainage and cooling water systems including pumps and instruments
    • Fire protection and suppression systems
  • Registered technologist or equivalent considered
  • Proficiency in the application of the most prominent mechanical-related Codes, norms, standards and guidelines, including ASME, ISO, ASTM, and ASHRAE
  • Proficiency in 2D CAD software such as Autocad for drawing preparation
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software such as Revit
  • Proficiency with the preparation and review process of design deliverables
  • Proficiency in the preparation of:
    • General arrangements, section views and detail drawings
    • P&IDs
    • Process Diagrams
    • Bills of materials
  • Proficient in English.


Preferred
  • On-site construction experience and ability to view design through a constructability lens
  • Familiarity with the design-build design process, construction/constructability, and typical testing practice
  • Fluent in French (written and spoken). #LI-GH

Base Compensation: $43 - 65 CAD/hour.

(Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location)
