About this Role

The main responsibilities of the Sr. Manager, Indirect Tax will be to serve as the corporate tax department’s subject matter expert and consultant on sales and use tax. This role oversees the global administration of the Vertex sales and use tax software platform and provides strategic guidance on sales and use tax planning, audit defense, and technical matters across the organization. This role will regularly provide support to operating companies within the Quanta family of companies that maintain their own independent sales and use tax functions.

What You'll Do

Sales & Use Tax Advisory and Technical Consultation:

  • Serves as the subject matter expert and internal consultant on sales and use tax matters for operating companies within the organization, each of which maintains its own sales and use tax compliance function.
  • Provides technical guidance to operating company tax and finance teams on contract review, nexus determinations, taxability of products and services, exemption certificate management, and complex transactions.
  • Reviews and advises on sales and use tax positions taken by operating companies to ensure consistency and compliance with applicable laws across jurisdictions.
  • Stays current with changes in sales and use tax laws, regulations, and best practices, and communicates relevant updates to operating company stakeholders.\

Tax Technology & Vertex Administration

  • Oversees the global administration of the Vertex sales and use tax software platform, including configuration, rate and taxability content management, and system updates.
  • Partners with IT and operating company stakeholders to manage Vertex integrations with ERP and billing systems across the organization.
  • Monitors and maintains sales and use tax software systems, making recommendations for enhancements or updates as needed.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves Vertex-related issues raised by operating companies, escalating to the vendor as needed.

Tax Planning, Compliance, Audit & Controversy

  • Assists in the development and implementation of tax planning strategies to optimize sales and use tax liabilities.
  • Manages relationships with external tax advisors and government tax authorities, ensuring timely and accurate responses to inquiries and requests.
  • Provides support during sales and use tax audits, coordinating with external auditors and operating company personnel and responding to audit inquiries and requests.
  • Supports the M&A function by performing sales and use tax due diligence on prospective acquisitions, identifying historical exposure and post-closing integration considerations for target companies.
  • Oversees the unclaimed property filing process, ensuring timely and accurate compliance with state unclaimed property reporting requirements across operating companies.
  • Reviews corporate entity sales and use tax filings prepared by operating companies to ensure accuracy and compliance prior to submission.
  • Responsible for property tax compliance and tax incentives for the corporate office.

Leadership & General Duties

  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with contacts at various operating companies and other departments.
  • Conducts tax research and provides guidance on indirect tax related issues.
  • Must stay current with tax legislation.
  • Adheres to internal standards, policies and procedures.
What You'll Bring

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; Master's degree or CPA certification is preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in sales and use tax compliance, preferably in a managerial or senior-level role within a corporate tax department and/or public accounting firm.
  • Deep understanding of U.S. sales and use tax laws, regulations, and compliance requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Proven experience advising or consulting on tax matters across multiple business units or operating companies, with strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Experience performing sales and use tax due diligence in an M&A context is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and ERP systems; hands-on experience administering Vertex sales and use tax software is strongly preferred, experience with other tax compliance software (e.g., OneSource, Avalara, etc.) is a plus.
