Overview

The Senior Accounting Manager leads the homebuilding accounting function for the Washington DC Division, overseeing financial reporting, job cost accounting, work-in-process analysis, cost of sales, reconciliations, budgeting, forecasting, and audit support. This role partners with operational and division leadership teams to ensure financial accuracy, maintain strong internal controls, and provide meaningful business insights. The successful candidate will have strong homebuilding accounting experience, technical accounting expertise, the ability to independently manage complex assignments, and a collaborative, team-oriented approach.

KeyResponsibilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day homebuilding accounting function, ensuring transactions are recorded accurately, timely, and in compliance with GAAP and company policies.

  • Lead the Housing month-end close process, including review of closing entries, cost of sales, inventory and work-in-process (WIP), job cost allocations, accruals, intercompany transactions, balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting analyses.

  • Review monthly and quarterly financial reporting packages for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with corporate reporting requirements.

  • Evaluate accounting processes and internal controls, identifying opportunities to strengthen compliance, improve efficiency, and enhance reporting accuracy.

  • Ensure compliance with corporate policies, delegated authority requirements, SOX/internal control standards, and internal control certification processes.

  • Partner with Land Development, Construction, Purchasing, Sales, and other operational teams to understand business activities, assess financial impacts, provide accounting guidance, and support business process improvements.

  • Monitor community performance and analyze operational and financial reporting, including budgets, WIP, sales activity, backlog, closings, margins, commissions, development forecasts, and key variances.

  • Research and resolve accounting issues, developing practical solutions that align with GAAP and company policies.

  • Support system implementations, automation initiatives, and process improvements that enhance scalability and operational effectiveness.

  • Lead accounting support for annual budgets, quarterly forecasts, and five-year business plans, including variance analysis and recommendations to improve financial performance and predictability.

  • Prepare and review ad hoc analyses and reporting for Division and Corporate leadership.

  • Partner with the VP, Finance to support quarterly and annual audits and serve as a liaison with internal and external auditors.

  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and development for accounting staff, including performance coaching, training, and succession planning.

  • Foster a collaborative, service-oriented culture and build strong relationships with operational and corporate stakeholders.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor27s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred.

  • Minimum of 5-8 years of progressive accounting experience leading to a senior level accounting position in a medium to large sized company; preferably in homebuilding.

  • Strong understanding of homebuilding accounting, including job cost accounting, WIP, inventory, closing entries, cost of sales, revenue, margins, budgets, forecasts, and operational reporting.

  • Experience leading month-end and quarter-end close processes and reviewing detailed accounting work prepared by others.

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work well with accounting, operations, construction, purchasing, sales, and leadership teams.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy in a fast-paced division environment.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to mentor, coach, and develop accounting staff.
