Job Title: Senior Gas Turbine Component Mechanical Design Lead

Working Pattern: Full time

Working location: Novi, MI/Hybrid - 2 Office Days/Week)

Relocation assistance will be provided if applicable.

Position Summary

As a Senior Gas Turbine Component Mechanical Design Lead, you will technically lead teams developing complex engineering solutions that satisfy cutting-edge aerospace functional and physical requirements and exhibit robustness for manufacturing capability, as well as functioning as a senior individual contributor. At Rolls-Royce's new Novi Defense Engineering site, you'll be responsible for mentoring the design team in developing, assessing, and delivering hardware that pushes the envelope with performance, life, and efficiency while maintaining safety and reliability.

What you will be doing

This role is expected to be a leader within the group to make technical decisions and lead projects with minimal management oversite. You will work to create design definitions that meet the given System/Sub-System/Component level requirements and product attributes. This is an exciting role where you will be able to apply your strong technical knowledge in mechanical design methodologies and understand cross-discipline engineering concepts which include, but are not limited to Design, Manufacturing Engineering, Aerodynamics, Thermodynamics, Performance, Stress and Lifing, Test, Cost Engineering, and Product Definition.
  • Lead and perform design changes for high-performance gas turbine hardware and systems, which includes (but is not limited to) creating design concepts, optimizing concepts to a final definition, preparing technical presentations and documents, performing multiple analyses, supporting creation of drawings, delivering hardware for validation, and release of hardware to production.
  • Perform analyses for gas turbine hardware and systems to substantiate suitability for new engine applications, extended performance of existing engines, and interface requirements.
  • Present and defend design solutions and technical work to program leadership and other stakeholders.
  • Support the supply chain in procuring hardware including review of supplier documentation, assessment of non-conforming hardware, and review of supplier change proposals.
  • Support manufacturing, assembly, service, and aftermarket issues promptly as they arise to keep production on target and the fleet in operation.
  • Lead investigations of in-service and/or development hardware issues including failure analysis, root cause / corrective action (RCCA), reporting, and documentation.
  • Be a point of contact within the group for cross-functional disciplines as you work together to deliver a solution.


Basic Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, with 5+ years of experience in mechanical design on gas turbine engines, OR
  • Master's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering, with 3+ years of experience in mechanical design on gas turbine engines, OR
  • JD/PhD in Mechanical or aerospace Engineering with a Dissertation/Research topic focused on gas turbine design
  • In order to be considered for this opportunity, you must be a US Citizen


Preferred Requirements:
  • Previous experience designing gas turbine components
  • Technical writing ability / experience
  • Previous experience with military customers
  • Previous experience with customer communication and requirements
  • Strong Technical background
  • Strong Teamwork capability
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with experience working with all aspects of product design - customers, suppliers, other engineering specialties, shop floor personnel, etc.
  • Strong Leadership qualities
  • Self-driven and motivated
