Full Job Description
About the Engagement
You will join BTA Design Services as an employee and work on-site at one of our clients, a global leader in optical and photonics technology with a well established engineering site in Ottawa. The work involves FPGA design for advanced, high-speed products at the leading edge of the optical networking and photonics industry. Full details of the client and program are shared with candidates under confidentiality during the interview process.

About the Position
We are looking for a seasoned FPGA designer who can ramp up quickly, take ownership with minimal supervision, and grow into a design prime role within the first couple of years. You will be responsible for FPGA design from specification through implementation, working closely with hardware, verification, and systems teams to deliver robust, production quality designs.

This is a full-time, on-site position at the client's Ottawa location. We are looking for someone motivated by a stable, long-term role who wants to build deep ownership of the designs they deliver.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and implement FPGA logic in SystemVerilog, from micro-architecture through to a working, timing-clean design.
  • Analyze and correctly handle clock domain crossings (CDC), including synchronization strategy and CDC verification.
  • Own the synthesis flow: configure tool settings, write and maintain timing constraints, and drive designs to timing closure.
  • Analyze synthesis and timing reports in depth to identify and resolve timing, congestion, and resource issues.
  • Partner with verification and systems teams to ensure designs are correct, testable, and implementation friendly.
  • Contribute to design reviews, documentation, and the continuous improvement of the team's FPGA design practices.

Must-Have Qualifications
  • Approximately 10 to 15 years of hands-on FPGA design experience, at a level that supports rapid ramp-up and growth into a design prime.
  • Strong, current design expertise in SystemVerilog.
  • Practical experience identifying and handling clock domain crossings (CDC).
  • Hands-on experience configuring synthesis tool settings.
  • Solid command of timing constraints (SDC) and constraint development.
  • Proven ability to analyze synthesis tool reports and act on the findings.
  • Available to work full-time, on-site at the client's Ottawa location.

Nice-to-Have
  • Some exposure to UVM-based verification.
  • Scripting skills (for example Tcl or Python) to support and automate design flows.
  • Familiarity with high-speed interfaces common in optical and networking products.

On-site Work
This role is full-time and on-site at the client's Ottawa office. Candidates must be able to work in Ottawa on a regular, in-person basis.

Compensation
CAD 150,000 to 170,000 per year, plus bonus and benefits. Compensation is heavily dependent on individual experience and capability. Final compensation will be confirmed based on the successful candidate's background.

This is a new position. Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
