Senior FileMaker Developer to lead the design, development, enhancement, and support of sophisticated FileMaker solutions.
This is a senior, hands-on development role for someone with deep expertise across the FileMaker platform and a strong understanding of application architecture, relational database design, scripting, integrations, security, performance optimization, and user experience.
The ideal candidate can independently take complex business requirements and translate them into scalable, reliable, and intuitive FileMaker applications while also helping establish development standards and mentor other members of the team.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the architecture, design, development, and ongoing enhancement of complex FileMaker applications using FileMaker Pro, FileMaker Server, and related platform capabilities.
- Design scalable relational data models, including tables, relationships, indexing strategies, and data structures that support both application performance and long-term maintainability.
- Develop sophisticated FileMaker scripts, calculations, custom functions, layouts, and workflow automation.
- Design intuitive, efficient user experiences that simplify complex business processes and improve user productivity.
- Build and maintain integrations between FileMaker and external systems using REST APIs, FileMaker Data API, JSON, XML, ODBC/JDBC*-, OAuth, webhooks, and middleware technologies.
- Troubleshoot complex application, data, scripting, integration, and performance issues across FileMaker Pro and FileMaker Server environments.
- Analyze and optimize FileMaker performance, including scripts, calculations, relationships, layouts, searches, network behavior, and server performance.
- Apply FileMaker security best practices, including privilege sets, account management, authentication, data access controls, and secure integrations.
- Support FileMaker Server administration, deployment, backups, maintenance, upgrades, and environment management.
- Establish and promote FileMaker development standards, naming conventions, reusable development patterns, documentation practices, and code quality expectations.
- Collaborate closely with business analysts, project managers, subject matter experts, and business stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into effective technical solutions.
- Evaluate existing FileMaker solutions and recommend improvements to application architecture, usability, performance, reliability, and technical debt.
- Produce clear technical documentation covering solution architecture, data models, integrations, development standards, deployment processes, and system dependencies.
- Participate throughout the application lifecycle, including requirements analysis, solution design, development, testing, deployment, production support, and continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Software Design, Information Systems, or a related technical field preferred.
- 7+ years of professional FileMaker development experience, including responsibility for complex, business-critical applications.
- Expert-level knowledge of FileMaker scripting, calculations, relationships, layouts, custom functions, security, and relational database design.
- Strong experience designing and maintaining large or complex FileMaker solutions with multiple users, workflows, integrations, and business processes.
- Extensive experience integrating FileMaker with external applications and services using REST APIs and JSON.
- Strong understanding of SQL and relational database concepts.
- Experience with FileMaker Data API, ODBC/JDBC, OAuth, or similar integration technologies.
- Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve complex FileMaker performance and application architecture issues.
- Strong understanding of application security, data integrity, error handling, logging, and reliable transaction processing.
- Proven ability to translate complex business requirements into maintainable, user-focused technical solutions.
- Experience working with existing or legacy FileMaker solutions and improving them without unnecessarily disrupting business operations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently on complex development efforts while collaborating effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience with Claris FileMaker certifications or advanced FileMaker training.
- Experience developing enterprise or operational applications that support complex, high-volume business processes.
- Experience integrating FileMaker with ERP, financial, healthcare, document management, or other enterprise systems.
- Experience with JavaScript or FileMaker Web Viewer-based development.
- Experience with tools and techniques for FileMaker DevOps, automated deployment, solution versioning, testing, and change management.
- Experience working in environments with formal documentation, validation, quality, or regulatory requirements.
- Experience mentoring developers or providing technical leadership within a development team.
