Overview
East West Bank is seeking a highly technical, hands-on Senior Engineering Leader to join the IT Business Solutions team. This leader will serve as a player-coach—setting engineering direction while remaining actively engaged in solution design, code reviews, and critical development work. The role will partner with business stakeholders, architects, cybersecurity, infrastructure, and delivery teams to build, modernize, and support secure, resilient banking applications. The ideal candidate combines deep software engineering expertise with strong knowledge of Azure or AWS, enterprise integration, operational reliability, and the governance expectations of a regulated financial institution.
Responsibilities
- Hands-on Engineering & Architecture: Contribute to critical development, conduct rigorous code reviews, and design secure, scalable applications aligned with EWB architecture, cybersecurity, SDLC, and change-management standards.
- API & Integration Engineering: Design and optimize resilient APIs, microservices, and integration patterns with strong authentication, authorization, data validation, auditability, and transaction integrity.
- Messaging, Performance & Scale: Implement enterprise messaging and event-driven solutions using technologies such as Azure Service Bus, Kafka, or IBM MQ, together with distributed caching such as Redis, to support reliable, high-volume banking workloads.
- Digital Experience Engineering: Lead the delivery of secure, accessible, and maintainable customer- and colleague-facing experiences using React, TypeScript, and modern state-management patterns.
- Technical Leadership & Business Partnership: Mentor engineering teams, establish practical standards, and translate business needs into well-governed solution options. Guide stakeholders through intake, architecture, security, delivery, production readiness, and support considerations to determine how requests should be best solved within EWB’s technology ecosystem.
- Cloud Platform Engineering: Build and operate cloud-native applications on Azure or AWS using infrastructure as code, automated CI/CD, containerization, secrets management, identity controls, and scalable deployment patterns.
- Reliability, Observability & Support: Embed logging, monitoring, alerting, performance management, and operational runbooks into solutions; support incident response, root-cause analysis, resiliency testing, and continuous service improvement.
Qualifications
Technical Core
- Cloud Ecosystems: Deep, hands-on experience architecting and operating production workloads in Azure—including App Service, AKS, Functions, Service Bus, Key Vault, Azure Monitor, and Application Insights—or comparable AWS services.
- UI Frameworks: Advanced JavaScript/TypeScript and React expertise, with a record of delivering secure, accessible, high-performing enterprise applications.
- Backend & Architecture: Strong backend engineering experience with microservices, RESTful or gRPC APIs, distributed systems, relational and NoSQL data stores, and secure integration patterns.
- Middleware & Performance: Demonstrated experience with messaging, event-driven architecture, caching, concurrency, performance tuning, and recovery patterns for business-critical applications.
- DevSecOps & Software Quality: Practical knowledge of CI/CD, automated testing, source control, infrastructure as code, vulnerability scanning, dependency management, secrets handling, and release controls.
- Site Reliability Engineering: Ability to define and influence service-level indicators and objectives across latency, traffic, errors, saturation, availability, capacity, and recoverability.
Experience & Leadership
- Professional Experience: 8–10 years of progressive software engineering experience, including at least 3 years in a technical lead or hands-on engineering management role supporting enterprise applications.
- Banking & Regulatory Environment: Experience in commercial banking, fintech, payments, lending, or another highly regulated environment, with working knowledge of cybersecurity, data protection, auditability, segregation of duties, resiliency, and change controls.
- Delivery & Governance: Proven ability to deliver through Agile methods while operating effectively within enterprise intake, architecture review, SDLC, testing, production-readiness, release, and post-production support processes.
- Leadership & Communication: Strong judgment and communication skills, with the ability to influence business and technology stakeholders, explain tradeoffs clearly, develop engineering talent, and drive accountability across cross-functional teams.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
