Full Job Description

The Atlantic is seeking an experienced, Los Angeles–based editor to grow our reporting on Hollywood and the broader entertainment industry.

This editor will join the Culture team and be instrumental in shaping coverage of the business and industry of Hollywood. You should have impeccable story judgment, substantial experience guiding reporters, and a desire to tackle the biggest stories and ideas in this world. You’ll be comfortable operating at all altitudes of the editorial process: The ideal candidate will have a track record of working quickly to deliver scoops and big-picture analysis for a general-interest audience; and also steering deeply reported stories that help readers understand the many shifts occurring across the industry (within studios, across platforms, among the many pockets of Hollywood’s workforce, and beyond).

You’ll have fluency in a wide array of related subject areas—technology, business, national politics—and a nuanced understanding of how they interact with the culture industry. You’ll be a sharp observer of coalescing trends, have sturdy skepticism about publicity cycles, and a nose for where the story is heading next. And you’ll have a creative sense of how to tell lively stories about the power and absurdities of Hollywood—and also just the plain fun of it all. This position will at times include night, early-morning, and weekend work.

Other qualifications of the ideal candidate include:

  • 10+ years of experience, with a demonstrated ability to shape the conversation about culture and the culture industry

  • A magazine sensibility, exceptional editing skills, and a strong interest in ideas-based journalism

  • Very high standards for clarity, accuracy, and journalistic rigor

  • A naturally collaborative spirit and desire to work within a close-knit team

  • A drive to be in the mix on urgent and consequential stories

Salary minimum: $105,000; Salary maximum: $200,000

This position is based in Los Angeles.
