Senior DevOps Engineer - Release EngineeringLocation: Boston/Marlborough, MA - Hybrid, 3 days per week
Role OverviewNasuni is looking for a
Senior DevOps Engineer - Release Engineering to help design, scale, and improve the systems that move software from development through testing and release.
You will be a senior technical contributor within DevOps / Release Engineering, with ownership of complex CI/CD pipelines, build and test infrastructure, build tooling and scripts, release automation, and engineering workflows used across multiple teams. Your work will directly influence software delivery speed, reliability, developer productivity, and release quality.
This role is suited to an engineer who has gone beyond maintaining pipelines and can independently diagnose systemic problems, design scalable solutions, establish reusable patterns, and lead technical initiatives across Engineering and QA.
It is not primarily a release-coordination or operations-support position. Success requires hands-on engineering depth and the ability to improve the underlying systems themselves.
Level & ScopeYou will independently own technically complex release-engineering problems from design through implementation and operational improvement. You will make technical decisions within the release-engineering domain, lead medium-to-large initiatives involving multiple engineering teams, mentor other engineers, and influence CI/CD standards and technical practices.
The role remains highly hands-on, balancing implementation with system design, technical leadership, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement.
What You'll Do- Design, build, and own scalable CI/CD pipelines and automation frameworks supporting multiple engineering teams.
- Engineer distributed build and test infrastructure using Jenkins and modern CI/CD patterns.
- Act as a build engineer as well as a release engineer: understand, modify, and improve product build scripts and tooling, and partner with development teams to remove build bottlenecks and improve repeatability.
- Own and optimize build environments and agent templates, using Packer together with Terraform and Ansible to define, provision, and maintain consistent build infrastructure.
- Improve artifact and package-management workflows, including RPM lifecycle management, repository organization, traceability, and promotion models in Artifactory.
- Improve pipeline performance, reliability, test parallelization, failure recovery, and developer experience.
- Build reusable automation and infrastructure patterns that incorporate security, scalability, observability, and operational resilience.
- Define CI/CD requirements for complex product changes and identify release, dependency, and infrastructure risks early.
- Design and evolve branching, versioning, and release workflows across multiple repositories.
- Develop automated validation for patch, release, and code-freeze workflows, including GitHub Actions where appropriate to verify branch state, policy compliance, and release readiness.
- Integrate automated quality gates and partner with Engineering and QA to improve test reliability and release readiness.
- Troubleshoot complex pipeline and distributed infrastructure failures and implement durable corrective actions.
- Strengthen monitoring, alerting, and operational visibility across build and release infrastructure.
- Lead cross-functional technical initiatives and drive alignment on architecture and implementation decisions.
- Mentor engineers in CI/CD, automation, infrastructure, and release-engineering practices.
- Use AI-assisted engineering tools where appropriate for tasks such as log analysis, code generation, troubleshooting, test creation, or workflow automation, while validating outputs for correctness, security, and production readiness.
- Evaluate opportunities to create repeatable AI-assisted workflows that improve engineering productivity without reducing technical ownership or quality.
QualificationsMust-Have- Strong professional experience in DevOps, release engineering, CI/CD, build infrastructure, or infrastructure automation.
- Advanced hands-on Jenkins pipeline development and distributed CI/CD experience.
- Hands-on build engineering experience, including the ability to read, modify, troubleshoot, and optimize build scripts and build tooling rather than only operate CI/CD pipelines.
- Strong automation or scripting ability using Python and/or Groovy.
- Strong Linux, networking, and infrastructure fundamentals.
- Hands-on Docker and Kubernetes experience.
- Experience designing reliable build/test infrastructure supporting multiple engineers or teams.
- Experience with branching models, release workflows, source control, and versioning.
- Ability to independently troubleshoot complex distributed-system or pipeline failures.
- Strong communication and technical decision-making skills.
Preferred- AWS, Azure, or GCP infrastructure and CI/CD experience.
- Packer, Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation, or comparable infrastructure-as-code and image/template automation tools.
- Experience with Artifactory and package-management workflows, particularly RPM repositories, artifact promotion, retention, and release traceability.
- Experience with GitHub Actions for automated branch validation, pull-request/release checks, or release-readiness controls.
- Datadog, Grafana, Prometheus, ELK, or comparable observability platforms.
- Experience mentoring engineers or leading cross-team technical initiatives.
- Practical experience using AI-assisted engineering tools with defined validation practices.
Ideal- Experience with storage, distributed systems, file services, or infrastructure software.
- Experience creating reusable CI/CD frameworks adopted across multiple teams.
- Experience modernizing or optimizing large build systems, build scripts, dependency management, or packaging workflows across multiple repositories.
- Demonstrated improvements to build speed, reliability, release quality, or engineering productivity.
Experience GuidelinesCandidates will typically bring
5-8+ years of relevant engineering experience, including substantial hands-on experience with CI/CD or release engineering. Depth of ownership and system complexity matter more than a specific year count.
