Job DescriptionThe Electrical Construction Representative (CNRP5) performs construction observation, inspection, and documentation of electrical systems associated with water, wastewater, environmental, transportation, and municipal infrastructure projects. The position serves as a field representative responsible for monitoring electrical construction activities, verifying compliance with contract documents, supporting construction management teams, and assisting with testing, startup, and commissioning activities.
The successful candidate will perform electrical inspection assignments with limited supervision while supporting Resident Engineers, Construction Managers, contractors, and owner representatives throughout project execution and closeout.
Duties and Responsibilities- Performs inspection and observation of electrical construction activities to verify compliance with plans, specifications, approved submittals, applicable codes, and accepted industry standards.
- Monitors installation of electrical power distribution systems, motor control centers (MCCs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), standby power systems, instrumentation and controls, SCADA systems, and associated equipment.
- Reviews contractor work for compliance with approved construction documents and identifies deficiencies requiring corrective action.
- Maintains daily reports, field logs, inspection records, photographic documentation, and project correspondence.
- Coordinates inspection activities with Resident Engineers, Construction Managers, contractors, utility providers, and owner representatives.
- Participates in project progress meetings, construction coordination meetings, and commissioning activities.
- Assists with review of Requests for Information (RFIs), field change requests, change orders, testing procedures, and pay applications.
- Witnesses testing, startup, performance demonstrations, and commissioning activities to verify proper installation and operation of electrical systems.
- Tracks punch list items and supports project closeout and turnover activities.
- Evaluates field conditions and communicates observations and recommended corrective actions to project management staff.
- Communicates project status, concerns, risks, and deficiencies to project management staff.
- Promotes and supports site safety requirements and safe work practices.
- Assists with knowledge sharing and coordination among project team members as required.
Skills and Abilities- Strong understanding of electrical construction practices, materials, equipment, testing procedures, and commissioning requirements.
- Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), OSHA regulations, and applicable industry standards.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical plans, specifications, wiring diagrams, control schematics, and shop drawings.
- Ability to identify construction deficiencies and effectively communicate corrective actions.
- Working knowledge of industrial electrical systems, instrumentation, controls, and SCADA systems.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate technical documentation and inspection reports.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently in a field environment while exercising sound professional judgment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, contractors, regulatory agencies, and project team members.
- Performs oversight of construction personnel working on small assigned area of the construction site.
- Ensures construction work put in place matches construction plans.
- Identifies deficiencies in constructed structures.
- Reviews contract terms and conditions.
- Ensures construction timelines, costs, and materials are in compliance with contract terms and conditions.
- Provides technical guidance and training to more junior staff.
- Reviews the work of more junior staff.
- Documents deficiencies, expected cost overruns, materials issues and any other related construction issue or risk related to their area of oversight.
- Prepares related reports (ex: monthly progress reports, etc.).
- Maintains daily report of construction activities.
- Performs other duties as required.
- Communicates construction issues to project leadership.
- Escalates issues to appropriate design staff for resolution.
- Communicates issue resolution to appropriate construction staff and closes the loop with project leadership when documented issues are resolved.
Skills & Abilities- Good ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in English.
- Intermediate knowledge of arithmetic.
- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite of applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
- Ability to adapt to new technologies and quickly learn new computer, smartphone or related applications and programs.
- Advanced knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in construction.
- Ability to read, understand, interpret and explain construction plans and drawings, contract provisions, and specifications.
- Advanced knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in construction.
Qualifications - High School diploma or Vocational Technical degree or equivalent.
- 8 years of related experience.
- Domestic and/or international travel may be required.
- The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands.
- Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Preferred Qualifications- Journeyman Electrician License.
- Master Electrician License.
- ICC Electrical Inspector Certification.
- NICET Certification.
- OSHA 10-Hour or OSHA 30-Hour Certification.
- Relevant electrical testing, commissioning, or construction inspection certifications.

This pay range is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels for the geographic location assigned to the position. In addition to geographic location, a candidate's salary is determined by several other factors including, but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, relevant work experience, skills, required certifications, and education/training.
Additional CompensationAll bonuses at CDM Smith are discretionary and may or may not apply to this position.
