Senior Civil Designer

Position Overview
The Civil Senior Designer leads Civil CAD production and provides operational oversight for the department's drafting resources, standards, and workflows. This position is responsible for maintaining production quality, coordinating staff workload, developing CAD personnel, and improving systems that support efficient project delivery. The role serves as the highest level within the Civil CAD career path and contributes department-level leadership, technical direction, and production planning.

Duties and Responsibilities
Technical Responsibilities
- Oversee the quality and consistency of civil engineering drawings and plan sets.
- Review graphics and CAD engineering plans for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with company standards.
- Maintain and updates company CAD standards, templates, details, and production procedures.
- Provide advanced technical direction related to AutoCAD, Civil 3D, civil plan production, and drafting standards.
- Resolve complex CAD, software, workflow, and production issues.
- Evaluate and implement software tools and production methods that improve quality and efficiency.
- Oversee outside consultants supporting CAD and graphics production.
Operational and Project Responsibilities
- Coordinate with project managers to identify production requirements, priorities, schedules, and staffing needs.
- Plan and assign CAD production workload based on project deadlines, staff capacity, and technical requirements.
- Monitor production progress and adjusts assignments to support timely project delivery.
- Manage the organization and maintenance of project directories and CAD production files.
- Develop and implements processes that improve productivity, consistency, and workflow efficiency.
- Maintain production records and prepares related reports and correspondence.
- Coordinate the maintenance of printers, plotters, software resources, equipment, and supplies used for CAD production.
Leadership and Staff Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop CAD technicians.
- Establish clear work expectations and provides technical direction, coaching, and performance feedback.
- Review completed work and evaluates employee performance, work quality, and technical development.
- Identify training needs and provides or coordinates instruction in software applications, drafting procedures, and company standards.
- Conduct performance reviews for direct reports.
- Participate in the hiring and selection of CAD staff and provides recommendations to senior management.
- Support succession planning and continued development within the Civil CAD career path.
- Promote consistent production practices, accountability, and collaboration across the CAD team.

Skills and Specifications
- Demonstrates advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
- Applies comprehensive knowledge of civil engineering plan production, CAD standards, and applicable municipal and state requirements.
- Interprets technical design information to support complex civil CAD production and technical direction.
- Uses Microsoft Office Suite effectively.
- Exercises sound technical and operational judgment when resolving complex production, staffing, and workflow issues.
- Applies advanced knowledge of CAD workflows, standards, and production processes to department operations.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications
- Twelve (12) or more years of progressively responsible CAD experience.
- Three (3) or more years of experience supervising CAD staff and overseeing CAD production.
- Experience developing staff, managing production workload, and improving CAD production processes.
- Associate degree in computer-aided drafting, engineering technology, or a related field preferred.
Physical Considerations
- Ability to operate standard office equipment, including a personal computer, printer, copier, and telephone.
- Ability to perform repetitive, fine hand and arm movements associated with computer use and document handling.
