Job Description

Build the dashboards and AI-assisted views that a federal agency's attorneys, field offices and program staff use to decide cases. You will sit with each office, define the product, build it in dbt and Apache Superset, prove every number against a count the office already trusts, and stay until people use it daily. Full time, W-2, starting 19 October 2026.
Why this job exists

Our customer is a federal agency that enforces federal law. This work is judged on one thing: products that the agency's legal, field and program offices accept and actually use. A dashboard nobody opens counts for nothing here.

You are the person those offices will know. You run the working sessions, write down what decision the product supports, build it, and carry it through acceptance into daily use. You work on a team of three with a Senior Azure Data Architect, who gives technical direction and builds the AI features you embed, and a Program Manager who handles the customer relationship and the schedule.
The environment you will work in

• A governed PostgreSQL read replica of the agency's case system
• The agency's dbt project, where you develop models and tests
• Apache Superset, with a developer role in dev and test
• A data catalog where every curated dataset is registered
• The agency's Git repositories and CI/CD, with all work committed from day one
• Python with pandas and visualization libraries for reconciliation and analysis
• Accessibility tools: a screen reader such as NVDA or JAWS, a contrast analyzer, ANDI or axe

What you will do

• Run time-boxed working sessions with each office and with the agency's data and CIO staff
• Write each product definition: the decision it supports, the grain, the system of record, the inclusion rules, who may see it, and an example that proves it correct
• Build dbt models with declared grain and tests for uniqueness, non-null keys, referential integrity and accepted values
• Build scheduled extracts that publish only after the full expected volume lands
• Reconcile every figure to a count the office already trusts before it is released
• Build Superset datasets over dbt models, never ad hoc SQL, then the dashboards and AI-assisted views on top
• Run acceptance testing with the office's own users: values reconcile, citations open, restricted roles see only what they should, and the interface works by keyboard
• Pair every chart with a data table, carry no meaning by color alone, verify contrast, and test the whole task with a screen reader
• Write the onboarding playbook, the user and administrator documentation, and run the enablement sessions
• Document every pipeline: source, schedule, dependencies, failure behavior and owner

Your first 90 days

• Days 1 to 30: suitability forms filed on day one; Superset ramp with the Architect; working-session kit built; first office discovery held
• Days 31 to 60: first office definition approved by the agency; dbt models with tests built in dev; second office discovery scheduled
• Days 61 to 90: first Superset product in dev with AI features embedded and reconciled to the office's control count; accessibility checks passing; acceptance script ready for month 4

How your work is judged

• The first product accepted and in active use by month 7, and one for each office by month 10
• Every released figure reconciles to its control count
• Every product passes all four acceptance confirmations
• The adoption package delivered by month 9 and used by agency staff themselves by month 11

What you need

• United States citizenship, and the ability to obtain a Public Trust Tier 2 determination
• 5 or more years across data engineering and business intelligence
• Advanced SQL
• Python with pandas
• Production experience with Power BI, Tableau, Looker or Apache Superset
• Git
• A record of building for non-technical users and getting them to adopt what you built

What sets a candidate apart

• An active Public Trust, Tier 4 or Secret
• dbt in production
• Apache Superset and PostgreSQL
• WCAG testing experience or the DHS Trusted Tester certification
• Work with legal, investigative or case-management data
• PL-300 or DP-600
• Living in the Washington, DC area

• Hybrid, based in Fairfax, Virginia, with some days in Washington, DC when needed; living in the Washington, DC area is preferred
• All customer work is done on a government-furnished laptop with a PIV credential
• You complete the DHS Trusted Tester training in month 2 or 3 if you do not hold it; the training is free
• If you come from Power BI, Tableau or Looker, the first two to four weeks include a Superset ramp with the Architect
