Role: Senior BESS Inverter Performance Engineer
Location: Canada or USA
Compensation: $100,000 - $140,000 annual salary + bonus
Role Overview for Senior BESS Inverter Performance Engineer
This role is responsible for diagnosing inverter-related performance issues across operating BESS projects and driving corrective action with inverter vendors. The candidate must be able to identify whether issues are caused by inverter software, firmware, controls logic, hardware, design limitations, or site-level power system conditions. The role also owns retrofit execution tracking, including affected assets, deployment status, validation results, risks, and closure using Excel, Smartsheet, or similar tools.
What You’ll Be Doing as a Senior Performance Controls Engineer
- Prioritize, investigate, and drive corrective actions for inverter-related performance issues across operating BESS projects.
- Perform root cause analysis using operational data, first principles, site evidence, and technical review to distinguish software, firmware, controls, hardware, design, and power system issues.
- Maintain vendor issue logs covering status, root cause, corrective action, validation, and closure.
- Review vendor release notes, firmware updates, design changes, and retrofit proposals for technical adequacy and operational risk.
- Work with inverter vendors to define corrective actions, retrofit requirements, implementation plans, validation criteria, and deployment schedules.
- Support troubleshooting of voltage, frequency, real power, and reactive power distribution issues where inverter behaviour interacts with site or grid conditions.
- Track retrofit rollouts across sites using Excel, Smartsheet, or similar tools, including affected assets, owner assignments, deployment status, validation evidence, risks, and closure criteria.
- Ensure all activities are performed in compliance with safety protocols, engineering standards, and company policies.
What You’ll Bring to the Position
- Engineering degree in electrical, computer, or mechanical engineering with a minimum of five years of experience in renewable energy and/or battery energy storage.
- Strong knowledge of inverter operation, dispatch control, firmware/software behaviour, controls logic, and hardware design considerations.
- Power systems knowledge is preferred, including voltage control, frequency response, and real/reactive power behaviour in grid-connected systems.
- Ability to manage multiple technical issues in parallel with strong organization, attention to detail, and follow-through.
- Experience troubleshooting inverter or BESS performance issues using operational data and event logs.
- Experience managing corrective action or retrofit rollouts across multiple sites, including status tracking, schedule management, stakeholder follow-up, and closure reporting.
- Proficiency with Excel, Smartsheet, or similar tools for issue logs, retrofit trackers, deployment dashboards, and action follow-up.
- Knowledge and experience with SCADA protocols (i.e. DNP3 and Modbus)
- Familiarity with industrial communication networks (fiber optics, network switches, TCP/IP, etc.)
- Clear technical communication with vendors, site teams, engineering, and management.
- Ability to travel up to 20% of time. Travel may be on short notice
