Description The Senior Architect will lead multidisciplinary project teams in the planning, design, and delivery of complex Aerospace & Industrial facilities, including cleanrooms and other controlled environments, secure and controlled-access spaces, assembly and manufacturing facilities, and energetics-related facilities. The Senior Architect will guide projects from programming and conceptual design through construction, balancing mission requirements, operational continuity, safety, security, constructability, schedule, budget, and client needs. The role requires the ability to translate specialized processes, equipment, workflows, and regulatory requirements into coordinated architectural solutions for new facilities, renovations, and facility expansions.
Duties:
- Lead architectural design from programming and conceptual design through construction completion for Aerospace & Industrial projects, in coordination with project managers, technical leads, clients, users, and construction teams.
- Develop, modify, and review drawings, specifications, studies, and design criteria for cleanrooms and controlled environments; secure and controlled-access spaces; assembly, manufacturing, and high-bay facilities; and energetics-related facilities.
- Translate client processes, equipment layouts, material and personnel flows, cleanliness classifications, security requirements, hazardous operations, and operational constraints into functional architectural programs and coordinated design solutions.
- Lead planning for complex industrial adjacencies, including production flow, maintainability, equipment access and replacement, utility access, personnel circulation, material handling, and separation of clean, secure, hazardous, and general-use areas.
- Coordinate architectural design with structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, fire protection, process, security, and specialty systems to support integrated facility performance.
- Participate in development of project scope, schedule, budget, staffing, procurement, phasing, and construction planning. Identify scope gaps and manage design changes in coordination with the project manager.
- Apply expert knowledge of architectural concepts, building codes, life-safety requirements, accessibility standards, and construction practices to complex Aerospace & Industrial facilities. Prepare studies, technical reports, code analyses, and specifications.
- Develop non-standard design solutions for facilities with specialized environmental controls, security protocols, equipment interfaces, blast or hazard considerations, and active operations.
- Perform quality reviews of architectural documents and project data to verify compliance with project requirements, client standards, applicable codes, industry criteria, constructability, and interdisciplinary coordination.
- Lead architectural construction administration, including submittal and RFI review, field observation, coordination with site personnel, resolution of design-related installation issues, and verification of installed work.
- Lead field surveys and existing-condition assessments in active industrial, secure, clean, or hazardous environments while complying with site access, safety, contamination-control, and foreign object debris requirements.
- Prepare and present design concepts, technical reports, code analyses, and recommendations to clients, authorities having jurisdiction, and internal stakeholders.
- Build effective relationships with existing clients, contractors, trade partners, and equipment vendors; identify client needs and support long-term account growth.
- Participate in sales and marketing efforts and identify, lead, and manage key Aerospace & Industrial pursuits.
- Lead development of cost proposals and qualification statements consistent with project scope, delivery strategy, and financial performance targets.
- Provide leadership, guidance, and technical direction to the architectural practice. Mentor and develop less-experienced architects and design professionals.
- Ensure adherence to QA/QC procedures and effective communication and coordination across architectural teams, disciplines, offices, and project partners.
- Comply with company and site-specific safety, security, quality, and access-control policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned and comply with all company policies and standards.
Qualifications - Bachelor Degree in Architecture from an NAAB accredited program and 8 years related experience.
- Master Degree in Architecture from an NAAB accredited program and 7 years related experience.
- Minimum eight years of architectural experience preferred.
- Registered architect preferred.
- Portfolio demonstrating design and graphic presentation skills is preferred.
- Expert knowledge of standard architectural concepts, including building codes, ADA standards, exterior envelope design, technical detailing, and specification writing.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a problem-solving environment and demonstrate critical thinking skills.
- Expert software and computer skills preferred, including BIM (Revit), Adobe Creative Suite, and 3D rendering software.
- Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, and organization.
- Experience in leading design teams for large, complex projects, delegating tasks, and guiding internal and client groups towards successful design outcomes.
- Ability to conduct detailed quality reviews of architectural documents.
- Experience with construction phase activities, including site visits, shop drawing review, and correspondence with contractors and client.
- Ability to travel.
- Registered Architect preferred.
Preferred:
- Professional Architect registration required, or ability to obtain registration within an agreed timeframe.
- Demonstrated experience leading the architectural design of large, complex projects and delegating work to multidisciplinary team members.
- Experience with one or more Aerospace & Industrial facility types, such as cleanrooms and controlled environments, secure spaces, assembly and manufacturing facilities, high-bay or integration facilities, laboratories, or energetics-related facilities.
- Working knowledge of industrial planning principles, including process and equipment integration, material and personnel flow, operational adjacencies, maintainability, utility coordination, and phased construction in active facilities.
- Ability to interpret client design criteria, security requirements, equipment information, process narratives, hazardous material data, and applicable building and life-safety codes.
- Ability to perform detailed quality reviews of architectural drawings, specifications, code analyses, and interdisciplinary coordination documents.
- Expert knowledge of standard architectural techniques, procedures, building systems, and construction practices, with the ability to develop practical solutions for non-standard conditions.
- Advanced proficiency with BIM authoring and coordination tools, including Revit, as well as Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, and 3D visualization software.
- Excellent written, verbal, facilitation, and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate technical information to clients, users, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated critical thinking, quantitative problem-solving, organization, collaboration, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work in active industrial environments and comply with project-specific safety, security, badging, cleanroom, and access requirements.
