Full Job Description
Description

Senior Analyst, Cost Optimization Services

Cost Optimization Services (COS) is an operating-cost intelligence and benchmarking engagement that helps E&P operators understand where their well and production costs sit relative to market peers, and why. As a Senior Analyst on the COS team, you will lead diagnostic cost analysis, benchmarking studies, and strategic cost reviews for major operators, and turn them into actionable insights. You will work directly with C-suite and operations leadership to answer complex cost questions: whether a vendor contract delivers claimed savings, how engineering choices drive cost variance, whether completion strategies pay back, and how well performance stratifies by age and type. Your analysis will be diagnostic, identifying root causes and cost drivers, not just reporting benchmarks.

The Intelligence Advisory Services team seeks to deliver a personalized and integrated consulting experience for our clients, producing high-quality and trustworthy results, maintaining an open-minded and creative mindset for solving unique industry challenges, and seeking to build deep partnerships with internal and external stakeholders across the industry. We keep improving how we work and do not rely on the status quo.

You will leverage the leading global energy SaaS platform and proprietary cost and operational databases to deliver quarterly Executive Briefings, cost datasets, and analytical dashboards. You will conduct independent, high-quality technical analysis across a wide range of cost structures (drilling and completion costs and production costs, major and minor spend categories, operated and non-operated wells), and engage effectively with various client personas (CFO, VP of Operations, Cost Management leads). The ideal candidate has deep fluency in drilling, completion, and production cost structures, familiarity with how operators and vendors account for spend, and a demonstrated ability to spot when a cost number is wrong or a variance is real.

Performance Objectives

  • Delivering quarterly Executive Briefings that diagnose cost drivers, benchmark performance against market peers, and turn findings into actionable insights on specific operational questions (for example, engineering versus procurement cost drivers, well type and vintage stratification, vendor performance mapping, and failure modes and associated costs)
  • Producing quarterly cost datasets and analytical dashboards that enable clients to track and act on cost optimization opportunities
  • Conducting diagnostic cost analysis that goes beyond benchmarking to identify the "why" behind cost variance, attributing costs to engineering choices, procurement decisions, and operational practices
  • Validating operator and vendor cost claims using rigorous data interrogation and cost reconciliation
  • Supporting clients between briefings through ad hoc analysis, responding to client questions, and refining cost models based on client feedback and new data
  • Building new analytical workflows where no established method exists, such as novel cost stratifications or vendor performance frameworks
  • Standardizing and documenting best practices and analytical workflows so each engagement builds on the last instead of starting over
  • Driving innovation and continuous improvement in methods, deliverables, and client experience, and challenging the status quo when a better approach exists
  • Compiling and clearly communicating cost analysis results in a variety of media (Executive Briefing decks, in-person meetings, Webex calls, dashboard narratives), preparing presentation material and modeling backup, and defending the approach directly to the client's financial and operations leadership when it is challenged
  • Leading the technical portions of briefing calls and in-person meetings with clients, leveraging Enverus Intelligence™ and Enverus Prism™ solutions to answer high-stakes cost questions with actionable insights
  • Mentoring and guiding junior colleagues and supporting technical requirements and initiatives for the broader Intelligence team
  • Partnering with Intelligence Research, Product, Sales, and Customer Success teammates to build and maintain strong relationships with and in support of clients
  • Identifying where Enverus products fall short of what client cost analysis requires, and specifying what would close the gap
  • Supporting advisory business development by turning proven analytical work and client findings into case studies and material Sales can take to market

Competitive Candidate Profile
  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Finance, Accounting, Mathematics, Computer Science, or Actuarial Science
  • 6 to 11 years of relevant work experience, including a minimum of 3 years of direct experience with drilling, completion, or production operations or costs, at an operator, service company, or advisory firm. Examples include operator cost management or financial planning roles tied to operations, engineering or contractor roles with cost accountability, cost audit or benchmarking work, and well economics or reserves evaluation.

Role Specific Competencies

  • Deep, applied knowledge of drilling and completion cost structures and production costs, including major and minor spend categories, engineering versus procurement trade-offs, completion strategies, well type and vintage economics, and failure modes and costs, sufficient to interrogate cost data and spot when a number does not align with industry practice or engineering logic
  • Familiarity with how operators and vendors account for, invoice, and report costs, and the ability to reconcile cost data from multiple sources and flag data integrity issues
  • Advanced knowledge in data analysis, cost benchmarking, and diagnostic methodology, sufficient to build new analytical workflows where no established cost structure or stratification method exists
  • Advanced proficiency with data management and analytical tools such as Excel, Access/SQL databases, Spotfire/Power BI platforms, and Enverus Prism™, sufficient to build new cost analysis workflows where none exist
  • Applying AI to build or extend analytical workflows where no established method exists, and knowing where AI output can be trusted versus where it requires independent verification
  • Comfort working in ambiguity, building approaches from the ground up rather than reusing past work
  • An improvement mindset: a drive to innovate, refine, and raise the standard rather than rely on the status quo
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a demonstrated ability to develop and drive actionable insights that help clients make better capital allocation and cost management decisions
  • High level of attention to detail in data reconciliation, cost validation, documentation, and deliverable preparation, ensuring accuracy and quality in cost analysis that will inform executive decisions
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work directly with C-suite and operations leadership, defend a cost analysis and methodology under challenge, and translate complex cost findings into clear, practical conclusions
  • Regular travel to client sites as engagements require, and the flexibility to work extended hours when a live briefing cycle or critical cost analysis timeline demands it
  • Ability to design a new cost analytical approach where no established method exists, and to document and standardize it so others can reuse it
  • Trusted to release cost analysis to a client without a second review of the mechanics
  • Ability to assess whether a cost data set or methodology supports the analysis being asked for and to flag its limits transparently

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of economic analysis functions (for example, NPV and IRR)
  • Professional designation (CFA, MBA, P.Eng., P.Geo.)
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (Spotfire, Tableau, PowerBI)
  • Experience with programming languages or databases (VBA, Python, SQL)
