Senior Accountant

Location: San Diego, CA
Work Arrangement: Onsite; 5 days per week
Employment Type: Full-Time

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Accountant to join our growing biotech organization in San Diego. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in public accounting, preferably with Big 4 experience, combined with hands-on experience in the biotechnology or life sciences industry.

This is a hands-on role with broad exposure across accounting and finance, combining strong technical accounting skills with operational ownership and cross-functional collaboration. This role will be responsible for supporting the month-end and year-end close processes, preparing and analyzing financial information, maintaining accurate accounting records, and partnering cross-functionally to support the company's financial reporting and operational objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and support the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules.
  • Perform detailed analysis of balance sheet and income statement accounts and investigate variances.
  • Prepare and process Payroll, including review of payroll information and related accounting.
  • Review and Process Expense Reports
  • Review and supervise Accounts Payable, including oversight of day-to-day activities and period-end processes.
  • Prepare financial reporting packages and supporting schedules for management.
  • Support the preparation of audit schedules and coordinate with external auditors.
  • Assist with fixed assets, prepaids, accruals, deferred expenses, and other key accounting areas as needed.
  • Support and strengthen internal controls and process improvements across the accounting function.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve accounting processes, systems, controls, and reporting.
  • Participate in special projects and other operational initiatives as the company advances its technology and mission.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 4+ years of progressive accounting experience, including experience in public accounting.
  • Big 4 accounting firm experience strongly preferred.
  • Biotechnology, pharmaceutical, life sciences, or other highly regulated industry experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Strong understanding of account reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and financial statement analysis.
  • Strong operational accounting skills and willingness to work hands-on across areas such as payroll, AP, expense reporting, and other day-to-day accounting processes.
  • Ability to supervise and review the work of others while maintaining ownership of individual responsibilities.
  • Ability to identify opportunities for process improvement and greater efficiency and help implement solutions.
  • Ambitious and motivated to take on increasing responsibility, learn quickly, and grow with the opportunities created by a fast-moving environment.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, and financial analysis.
  • Experience with an ERP system such as NetSuite.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work onsite in San Diego, California.

Preferred Qualifications
  • CPA or CPA eligibility.
  • Familiarity with accounting for R&D activities, clinical trials, and CRO/vendor relationships.
  • Experience with NetSuite ERP system.
  • Experience in a high-growth biotech or life sciences environment.
