Full Job Description
The Safety Director plans and implements the company's safety program by partnering with all areas of the business to ensure a safe, productive, healthy, and accident-free work environment across all Evergreen locations and jobsites in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and other states. This position will manage a team of safety professionals that assist in carrying out the company's safety program. The comp range for this role is $120,000 to $140,000 per year, based on experience. Essential Functions • Drives workplace safety • Collaborates with Evergreen leaders to develop safety solutions • Develops strategies, policies and programs to instill a safe culture • Collaborates with Heritage Construction & Materials and related companies on required safety initiatives • Develops metrics for measuring the effectiveness of safety initiatives • Conducts / coordinates noise and dust monitoring • Maintains hearing conservation program • Oversees radiation safety program • Serves on necessary safety committees and serves on other Heritage safety teams/committees as appropriate • Promotes safety and health awareness through internal company memoranda, newsletters and specific training program • Leads the safety department • Mentors safety staff and ensures their professional development • Supports employee involvement, assumes leadership role in developing positive work environment • Monitors and maintains compliance with DOT, OSHA, EPA, IDOT, and other regulatory agencies • Coordinates all safety/regulatory compliance measures throughout all office and construction sites in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan and ensures all requirements are implemented • Develops current and comprehensive knowledge of all applicable state, federal and local health and safety regulations/laws/requirements affecting the business including environmental, health, and safety • Creates and files all required reports • Conducts job site internal audits • Identifies and evaluates risk hazards and develops proper measures of control • Develops and coordinates health and safety training for orientation, refreshers, and annual training • Identifies safety training needs and develops training curriculum • Ensures required training is conducted; develops an annual schedule • Periodically reviews and updates safety training materials • Oversees incident response • Partners with onsite/plant managers to conduct investigations and analysis of safety incidents • Identifies root cause of incidents and implements corrective action • Completes required reporting for OSHA, HCM, THG and other entities • Acts as a liaison with claims processors, medical personnel, insurance claims adjusters, as needed • Maintains highest levels of confidentiality • Stays current on safety programs and developments by maintaining contact with others in the field (e.g., OSHA, professional association and educational groups, and professional development efforts) • Ensures health and safety is the number one goal by following policies, processes, and acting in safe manner at all times • Champions the company’s culture of safety and supports a culture of safety-first behaviors and decisions • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned, including but not limited to continuously growing in alignment with the Company’s core values, competencies, and skills. Education Qualifications • Required Bachelor's Degree in Safety Management, Construction Management or related discipline, or equivalent work experience; Required Experience Qualifications • 5+ years work experience in corporate safety department/safety management required • Experience in development of safety processes and training of individuals on process required • Experience in heavy highway or industrial setting preferred Skills and Abilities • Safety Expert • Strong computer / technological skills; Proficiency in Microsoft Suite programs • Strong communication skills • Accountability • Attention to detail • Ability to work a flexible schedule as business needs require • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions on heavy highway construction sites • Ability to travel • Participate in safety briefings, job briefings, and other meetings - pass on information from team members, management or customer • Must be able to work with a team, take direction, follow work rules, and take on additional job responsibilities as needed or assigned • Perform all work in compliance with company standards, procedures, and regulatory requirements • Must possess and exhibit excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently Licenses and Certifications • Valid Drivers License required • OHSA Certification preferred Working Conditions/Physical Demands • Ability to work in both office and heavy highway construction jobsites including exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, and windy conditions caused by weather, moving traffic, noise, fumes, mechanical and heavy equipment • Indoor conditions that include standard office equipment such as computers, photocopier, phone, filing cabinets, cubicles • Ability to work flexible schedule as business needs require • Sits at desk/computer for long periods of time • Sits in motor vehicle and drives regularly • Travel to job sites and satellite offices is required; primarily day travel, but some overnight may be necessary
