WHAT'S THE TEAM LIKE
The Safety, Security, Compliance, and Emergency Response team ensures the safe and secure operation of Calgary International and Springbank Airports. This team plays a critical role in regulatory compliance, emergency preparedness, and operational assurance, directly impacting the airports' efficiency and safety. Their work supports the strategic goals of the organization and ensures a safe environment for all stakeholders.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct Airside Traffic Directive and AVOP Program Enforcement, including monitoring and/or ticketing for compliance with all AVOP, Airside Traffic Directive, and general safety policies and procedures.
- Identify hazards to safe operation on the airfield, inclusive of personnel, vehicle, and aircraft traffic, with the ability and expectation to immediately correct as may be necessary. Determine appropriate actions to address immediate safety threats and implement immediate containment actions to prevent further loss or injury.
- Conduct fulsome investigations into safety events that occur airside, collaborating with airfield tenants, contractors, and YYC Crew to ensure all safety incidents are addressed and corrective actions are in place to prevent re-occurrence. Establish and communicate investigative conclusions and review and approve corrective actions from tenants, contractors, and YYC leadership.
- Assess processes, systems, and engineering deficiencies to determine human and organizational factors that contribute to incidents. Utilize the results of these assessments to determine appropriate application of engineering controls, education, or enforcement.
- Communicate and collaborate with frontline personnel, leadership, and head office representatives of air carriers and airfield operators regarding AVOP, Airside Traffic Directive, and aviation safety policies, procedures, and practices.
- Prepare complete and accurate AVOP violation records, aviation safety reports, and investigation documentation in accordance with the Safety Management System, investigation procedures, and Safety Compliance Officer requirements. Develop investigative reports for YYC management as well as tenant and contractor leadership.
- Engage in continuous education activities with companies operating on the airfield to ensure they maintain ongoing awareness and compliance with required safety performance.
- Act as relief for AVOP testing and certification activities when operationally required, including operating an Authority vehicle in maneuvering areas and adverse weather conditions.

- Post-secondary diploma in aviation safety, occupational health and safety, or a related field is required. Relevant professional experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
- 4-6 years of experience in aviation safety in all or many of the following areas: Safety Management Systems, hazard identification and control, safety investigations, compliance and enforcement, risk and root cause analysis, or safety program administration is required.
- Demonstrated experience investigating safety incidents, preparing defensible reports, identifying root causes, developing corrective action plans, and verifying the effectiveness of corrective actions is required.
- Experience working with internal and external partners in a respectful, professional, and empathetic manner with a proven track record of continuously improving operational safety performance through partnership and collaboration.
- Ability to make sound and effective decisions related to operational safety based on risk tolerability, evidence, and investigative conclusions.
- Working knowledge of Canadian aviation and airport safety requirements, including the Canadian Aviation Regulations, Aeronautics Act, TP 312, Airport Traffic Regulations, and applicable safety policies and procedures.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a D AVOP, and valid ROC-A.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Adobe applications to maintain records, analyze information, prepare reports, and deliver presentations.
- As this position is considered safety-sensitive, candidates must successfully complete pre-employment drug and alcohol testing as part of the hiring process.
- This role includes driving as part of its duties; therefore, candidates will be required to provide a valid Class 5 driver's license and a current driver's abstract as part of the hiring process.
WHAT ADDITIONAL SKILLS ARE AN ASSET
- Previous experience delivering safety, driver, or compliance training and conducting competency-based testing.
- Experience working in an airport, airside, transportation, or other safety-critical operational environment.
