Job Summary and Responsibilities
As an Operating Room Registered Nurse, you will be a central figure in our surgical services team, serving as the patient’s advocate during their most vulnerable moments. You will provide exceptional, compassionate perioperative care, ensuring the highest standards of safety and clinical excellence within the sterile environment.
Every day, you will collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and scrub technicians to facilitate seamless surgical procedures. You will conduct critical pre-operative screenings, manage intraoperative patient safety, and provide vital education to patients and their families. By leveraging advanced surgical technology and streamlining procedural workflows, you will ensure our patients feel informed, safe, and at ease throughout their surgical journey.
To be successful in this role, you must combine robust clinical knowledge—specifically in sterile technique and surgical intervention—with technological proficiency, quick critical thinking, and a steadfast commitment to patient-centered care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Comprehensive Assessment & Care: Completes all pre-operative, intraoperative, and post-operative assessments, admissions, and hand-offs within the timeframes established by hospital policy.
- Intraoperative Vigilance: Reassesses patient status continuously throughout the surgical procedure, identifying predictable patient problems, potential life-threatening situations, and high-risk complications; initiates appropriate, rapid-response interventions.
- Sterile Field Management: Demonstrates expert knowledge of aseptic technique, maintains the integrity of the sterile field, and coordinates effectively with the surgical team to ensure procedural efficiency.
- Holistic Patient Advocacy: Identifies the psycho-social, spiritual, and cultural needs of surgical patients and their families, providing emotional support and addressing anxieties regarding anesthesia and surgical outcomes.
- Risk Mitigation: Recognizes the critical relationship between the surgical environment (equipment, positioning, and sterility) and patient physiological status, taking proactive steps to prevent surgical site infections, pressure injuries, or other adverse events.
- Communication & Education: Acts as the primary liaison between the patient, the family, and the surgical team. Provides clear pre-operative instructions and post-operative discharge education, ensuring that the patient and their support system feel empowered and informed.
- Coping & Support: Evaluates current patient/family coping mechanisms and support systems, providing the necessary reassurance and guidance to navigate the stress of a surgical procedure.
