This is an applied role supporting field-based human performance studies in environmental extremes, including leading Defense Health Agency (DHA) efforts in heat acclimatization. This role integrates physiological subject matter expertise with applied data science capabilities to manage and interpret large scale physical datasets collected in operational environments.

This position is based in Natick, MA and is primarily on-site, with situational telework permitted only when approved.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  • Real-time data collection using wearable sensors.
  • Data streaming coordination includes information management rights, iCloud use, computer management and security, and data management of large data sets.
  • Designs and leads research protocols evaluating human physiological responses to heat, cold, and high terrestrial altitude.
  • Collects, manages, and analyzes large physiological datasets from laboratory, field, and wearable sensor studies.
  • Coordinates and leads field research teams conducting studies at military installations.
  • Develops technical reports, scientific manuscripts, presentations, and research documentation.
  • Collaborates with investigators and research teams to translate physiological data into actionable findings and recommendations.
Qualifications

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to coordinate and lead teams executing field studies at military installations.
  • Strong scientific analysis, manuscript preparation, technical writing, and presentation capabilities.
  • Ability to coordinate and lead a team of investigators to execute field studies at military bases.
  • Ability to communicate (both in written and oral settings) to larger audiences.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Environmental Physiology.
  • Subject matter expertise in physiological responses to heat, cold, and high terrestrial altitude.
  • Experience designing and developing research protocols involving environmental extremes.
  • Experience with wearable physiological sensors and real-time physiological data collection.
  • Experience managing and analyzing large physiological datasets
  • Experience with data cleaning, processing, statistical analysis, and interpretation of physiological data.
  • Experience with exercise and metabolic testing, including maximal oxygen uptake, submaximal endurance testing, resting ventilation, and pulmonary function testing.
  • Experience with phlebotomy and clinical blood gas analyzers
  • Data cleaning skills in MATLAB and EXCEL to time align data points with various sensors and identify erroneous data points and outliers.
  • Ability to code in MATLAB, R studio, SPSS and SAS for final data analysis and development of predictive algorithms to predict illness.
  • Ability to interpret findings using subject matter expertise and literature reviews to validate the real-time models and confirm whether the findings are normal or abnormal from expected physiologic responses to a given environment.
  • Subject matter expertise in the physiologic response to cold, heat and high terrestrial altitude.
  • Subject matter expertise in exercise and metabolic measurements including maximal oxygen uptake, submaximal endurance testing, and resting ventilation and pulmonary function testing.
  • Subject matter expertise in phlebotomy and clinical laboratory skills in running blood gas analyzers such as the NOVA Profile Plus, Radiometer, or ISTAT clinical blood analyzers.
  • Travel: CONUS travel may be required based on study schedules and mission needs.
  • Must obtain a favorably adjudicated Tier 3 investigation (or equivalent). At minimum, a favorable interim suitability determination must be granted before contract work begins, pending final adjudication.
