About the Role

 

We are seeking an experienced Regulatory Counsel to provide strategic legal support across development, commercial and operations functions for a leading renewable power platform. This role will focus on U.S. and Canadian energy regulatory matters impacting a diversified portfolio of generation and transmission assets.

 

The ideal candidate is a law firm–trained attorney with in-house experience, bringing deep expertise in FERC, NERC, DOE, FCC and other laws and regulations governing electric power generation and transmission together with regional market rules and compliance frameworks. The ability to deliver practical, business-oriented legal advice in a fast-paced environment is critical.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise on federal, regional, and provincial/state regulatory frameworks governing the development, ownership, and operation of electric generation and transmission assets
  • Provide day-to-day counsel on FERC regulations (including EWG, QF and Standards of Conduct), compliance programs, internal policies, training and audits
  • Support development and commercial teams on interconnection, transmission service, and market participation strategies across U.S. and Canadian markets
  • Interpret and advise on RTO/ISO tariffs and market rules (e.g., ERCOT, PJM, MISO, CAISO, NYISO, ISO-NE) and emerging regulatory developments
  • Provide regulatory input into commercial arrangements, including PPAs, LGIAs, transmission service agreements, trading agreements and asset management structures
  • Advise on commodity trading arrangements and energy market risk allocation and mitigation, including Dodd-Frank and CFTC
  • Support energy regulatory aspects of the due diligence and acquisition of electric power generation and transmission assets and businesses
  • Support permitting of regulated assets
  • Lead and manage regulatory filings, proceedings, and stakeholder engagement, including interactions with FERC, RTOs/ISOs and Canadian regulatory bodies
  • Partner cross-functionally with Development, Commercial, Energy Management, Regulatory Affairs, Compliance and Operations teams
  • Coordinate and manage external counsel (including top-tier energy regulatory firms) on complex or strategic matters

Qualifications

Required:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) and license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
  • 7–12+ years of experience in energy regulatory law
  • Top-tier law firm training in energy regulatory or project development matters
  • In-house legal experience at a reputable company
  • Deep, practical expertise in:
    • FERC regulations and Federal Power Act
    • FERC Standards of Conduct (required)
    • RTO/ISO market rules and transmission frameworks
  • Strong analytical, drafting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to translate complex regulatory requirements into clear, actionable business guidance

Preferred:

  • Experience supporting renewable energy platforms (wind, solar, storage)
  • Familiarity with Canadian regulatory regimes
  • Experience with NERC compliance and enforcement matters
  • Background comparable to leading external energy regulatory counsel

The expected starting pay range for this role is $149,000 - $186,000 USD. This range is an estimate and base pay may be above or below the ranges based on several factors including but not limited to location, work experience, certifications, and education. In addition to base pay, Pattern’s compensation program includes a bonus structure for full-time employees of all levels.
