LOCATION: KAUAI VETERANS MEMORIAL HOSP | Inservice Educ-Nursing

POSITION STATUS: 1.00 | Permanent

SALARY RANGE: BU09 | SR22

SALARY RATE: $125,400.00 (Annual Salary) based on the FTE

JOB DUTIES: This is a regional position that is located in the In-Service Education department of the Hawai'i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua'i Region, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai'i. HHSC Kaua'i Region consists of Kaua'i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), both critical access hospitals; The Kaua'i Region Clinics; and its affiliates.

The In-Service Education department plays a vital role in enhancing the professional development and competency of healthcare staff through structured training programs and educational initiatives. This department is responsible for assessing the educational needs of employees, designing and implementing relevant training sessions, and providing ongoing support to ensure that staff members are equipped with the latest knowledge and skills necessary for high-quality patient care. The department also facilitates orientation for new hires, promotes continuing education opportunities, and ensures compliance with regulatory standards and accreditation requirements. By fostering a culture of lifelong learning, the In-Service Education department contributes to improved clinical outcomes, patient safety, and overall organizational effectiveness.

Under the direction of the Registered Professional Nurse (RPN) V (Regional In-Service Education Nurse Manager), this position assists in the planning, development, training, evaluation, and coordination of in-service education for all hospital and clinic staff, agencies, and volunteers, and is assigned to perform other duties as needed. This position is responsible for ensuring that the age-appropriate healthcare needs of the adult, geriatric, pediatric, and newborn populations are met by coordinating directly or providing in-service training to employees as mandated by all state and federal regulations, the Joint Commission (TJC), and other accrediting bodies. The RPN IV works rotating shifts, weekends, and floats to other units to assist or take assignments in direct patient services, and travels to various facilities within the Kaua'i Region as required.

The RPN IV reports to the RPN V (Regional Inservice Education Nurse Manager), position number 20862, or their designee.

THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE: Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week. Applicants are required to provide evidence of education, certification, and licensure.

EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Graduation from a nursing program with a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is highly desirable. Relevant substitutions may be considered.

LICENSURE:

  • A current license to practice as a professional nurse (RN) in the State of Hawai'i.
  • A current State of Hawai'i motor vehicle operator's license (Type #3) is preferred.


CERTIFICATIONS:

  • A current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) is required at the time of appointment.
  • Current certifications in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) issued by the AHA; Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI); Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring (IFM/AFM); Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP); Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood Pressure, Labs, and Emotional Support (STABLE) are highly recommended.


GENERAL EXPERIENCE: One and one-half years (1½) of professional nursing experience where the applicant independently provides nursing care to patients in a clinic, hospital, or institution.

SUPERVISORY APTITUDE: Applicants must demonstrate supervisory aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments that involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects; by serving as a group or team leader; or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory or administrative capabilities exist; by completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.

SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED: Possession of a master's degree from an accredited college or university school of nursing may be substituted for one year of nursing experience.

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • KNOWLEDGE OF: nursing theory and practice; nursing techniques and procedures; nursing literature and current trends and development in nursing; biological, physical, social and medicinal sciences as related to nursing theory and practice; nursing techniques and procedures; Joint Commission requirements, and those of other federal, state, or private regulatory/review organizations with which the hospital interacts.
  • ABILITY TO: plan and schedule the work of others and utilize the principles and practices of supervision; apply nursing theory and practice in planning and giving nursing care; recognize, interpret, and evaluate symptoms of patients' condition; and take appropriate action; initiate and maintain working relationships with members of the medical staff, administration, nursing, and other departments and agencies affiliated with the hospital.
