DetailsUtah has the ninth lowest number of physicians and the lowest number of primary care physicians per capita in the United States. Utah's physician workforce does not meet the state's needs, particularly in rural communities. The Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine (SFESOM) at the University of Utah is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to join the administrative leadership team at the Southern Utah Regional Medical Campus (SURMC) in St. George, Utah. The SURMC will increase the number of medical student graduates pursuing careers in rural medicine, with a focus on primary care and other high-need generalist fields. A class of 10 medical students per year-the Southern Utah cohort-will begin their educational experiences at the SURMC in Fall 2027, after completing Phase 1 (2026-27) of a new mission-driven MD program on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City. All SURMC students are SFESOM Rural Medicine Scholars (RMS) alongside 10 additional medical students per year based in Salt Lake City who complete a longitudinal clinical training experience at other rural sites across Utah and the Mountain West.
Job SummaryThe SURMC Regional Faculty Director of Admissions and Student Affairs (RFDASA) collaborates with faculty and staff to design and implement innovative strategies for outreach, selection, and evaluation of future SURMC students, collaborating on admissions processes that reflect the SFESOM's mission and values. Once admitted, the RFDASA works directly with medical students to facilitate their academic growth, personal wellness, and professional identity formation. The RFDASA provides leadership and mentorship to the SURMC Admissions and Student Affairs staff teams. The RFDASA supports the University of Utah's goals and mission and acts as a catalyst between departments, faculty, staff, students, and external entities.
The SURMC RFDSA will report directly to the Associate Dean of SURMC. As a rural regional campus of the SFESOM, the RFDASA also collaborates closely with the Associate and Assistant Deans of Student Affairs, the Assistant Dean of Admissions, and the Senior Associate Dean of Rural, Underserved, and Regional Medical Education. This newly created position holds salary support of 0.25 FTE and is an adjunct appointment in the Division of Medical Education. Salary will be set for the administrative effort based on benchmarks utilized for other senior administrative leaders in the SFESOM Dean's Office. Academic rank will be commensurate with education and experience.
Roles & Responsibilities• Develops and implements a vision for SURMC admissions and student affairs programming in partnership with Salt Lake and regional campus leadership to ensure alignment with SFESOM mission and educational goals across campuses.
• Partners with Office of Admissions, SURMC, and RMS program leadership, faculty, and staff to oversee all aspects of the RMS admissions process, of which the SURMC is a part, ensuring recruitment and selection of exceptional candidates for the regional campus and the RMS program overall, and full compliance with internal policies and accreditation-related, regulatory, and legal standards.
• Represents SFESOM, RMS, and SURMC admissions to internal and external parties, including University offices, local/regional partners, national medical education consortia, accrediting bodies, and application services.
• Supports applicant screening for the RMS program.
• Co-chairs the RMS selection committee with a Salt Lake City campus counterpart, and supports staff in the recruitment, training, and evaluation of its members.
• Serves as a SURMC and RMS program spokesperson for the SFESOM medical education program to premedical advisors, educational institutions, and the broader academic community, strengthening relationships that support recruitment and outreach.
• Develops programs to ensure appropriate support for SURMC students in the areas of student wellness, academic success, course scheduling, financial aid, student records and transcripts, visiting student experiences, and the residency match process.
• Meets individually with all SURMC students at least once a year to review their academic progress, personal wellness, professional identity formation, specialty decision making and match process.
• Participates in the attempts to eradicate medical student mistreatment including reviewing mistreatment reports as assigned, tracking and categorizing mistreatment events, and meeting with clinical departments to report mistreatment events.
• Participates in the creation of the yearly Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) for SURMC students.
• Participates as a representative of Student Affairs and Admissions in other Dean's Office wide committees such as the Education Program and Policy Committee (EPPC), Academic Readiness Committee (ARC), and other University committees as needed.
• Participates in a variety of community building events within the house model and SURMC campus to build strong relationships with students.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications• Advanced medicine degree (MD or DO) required.
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited residency.
• Eligibility for an unrestricted Utah physician and surgeon license (see DOPL requirements).
• Demonstrated leadership experience, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work with various stakeholders in the SFESOM.
• Strong experience in medical education and medical student support services and contemporary knowledge of the culture of academic medicine, the challenges in the Match Process (UME to GME transition), and the issues of wellness, diversity, academic performance that medical students face is preferred.
