Sitting within the Sustainability team, this position moves beyond day-to-day transactional outreach to drive long-term community development frameworks, public-private partnerships (PPPs), economic diversification projects, and community grant/infrastructure initiatives that support sustainable town growth and enhance AGA's socio-economic footprint.
As a key social performance leader, the Specialist partners closely with Community Affairs, Permitting, Supply Chain/Procurement, and Human Resources to integrate local procurement and workforce development strategies into broader regional growth plans across Nevada Projects.
Key Responsibilities
Socio-Economic Development Strategy
• Design, implement, and govern the Southern Nevada Regional Development and Social Investment Master Plan, ensuring long-term community self-reliance beyond the life-of-mine.
Economic Diversification & Local Capacity
• Lead initiatives that foster local business incubation, regional tourism development, vocational training pipelines, and economic diversification projects across Nye County and the Beatty region.
Strategic Partnerships & Grants
• Identify, structure, and manage multi-stakeholder partnerships and co-funding opportunities with county agencies, state development authorities, non-profits, and educational institutions.
Community Infrastructure & Legacy Projects
• Oversee the planning and execution of approved social infrastructure investments, civic improvement projects, and community revitalization grants.
Social Impact Assessment & Monitoring
• Establish socio-economic baseline metrics, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and impact evaluation frameworks to track the long-term effectiveness and return on investment (ROI) of community development capital.
Cross-Functional Internal Alignment
• Collaborate closely with Community Affairs, Permitting, Supply Chain/Procurement, and Human Resources to integrate local procurement and workforce development strategies into broader regional growth plans.
Governance & Corporate Reporting
• Ensure all regional development agreements, grant funding disbursements, and project milestones comply with AngloGold Ashanti's corporate sustainability governance standards, ICMM principles, and ESG reporting requirements.
Requirements
• Bachelor's Degree in Urban/Regional Planning, Economic Development, Social Sciences, Business Administration, Public Policy, Sustainability, or a closely related discipline required.
• Master's Degree in Regional Planning, Public Administration (MPA), or Economic Development (or relevant professional certifications such as CEcD - Certified Economic Developer) preferred.
• Minimum 5 to 8+ years of progressive professional experience in regional economic development, sustainability, social performance, community development, or corporate social responsibility (CSR) within the mining, energy, heavy civil, or public planning sectors.
• Proven track record leading multi-stakeholder development initiatives, economic revitalization projects, or large-scale community investment portfolios.
• Demonstrated experience working with rural municipalities, regional economic development authorities, and county-level government entities (experience in Nevada/Nye County is highly advantageous).
• Comprehensive understanding of socio-economic baseline studies, Social Return on Investment (SROI) methodologies, and community development frameworks in resource-based regions.
• Practical familiarity with federal, state, and local grant funding mechanisms, public-private financing structures, and municipal planning processes.
• Strong knowledge of international mining sustainability standards (ICMM, IFC Performance Standards, UN SDGs) and social risk governance.
• Strong strategic planning and business acumen with the ability to analyze regional market trends and evaluate commercial feasibility for non-mining business ventures.
• Exceptional stakeholder facilitation, consensus-building, negotiation, and public presentation skills to align corporate leadership, civic authorities, and local community leaders.
• Proven program and budget management capability to oversee multi-year project budgets and track multi-phase development deliverables.
• Advanced technical and business writing skills to author executive business cases, socio-economic impact reports, and formal board presentations.
