OverviewThe Radiation Oncology Physicist is responsible for precise and accurate delivery of treatment plans, and Quality Control of equipment as directed by the Director of Medical Physics .Responsibilities- Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and ability to engage in the design optimization, technical evaluation, and precise and accurate delivery of treatment plans under the supervision of the Director of Medical Physics
- Demonstrates knowledge and ability to perform quality control test to monitor baseline performance values
- Demonstrates the ability to assist the Director of Medical Physics in an annual review of the effectiveness of the Quality Control Program
- Under direct supervision, the medical physicist must maintain documented procedures of instrument calibration
- Demonstrates the ability to assist the Director of Medical Physics in an independent check of the output of each beam performed annually to verify that the treatment unit Calibration is consistent with national standards
- Demonstrates knowledge and ability to ensure that those elements of imaging equipment quality control directly relevant to radiation oncology planning are carried out at an appropriate frequency
- Block mounting techniques, mechanical integrity of simulators, block cutting devices, and attachment holders on treatment equipment must be reviewed by the physicist and included as part of the Quality Control Program
- Demonstrates knowledge and ability to assist the Director of Medical Physics in periodically evaluating all equipment for continued utility, appropriateness, reliable performance, age and condition, and make recommendations on a practical life span
- Demonstrates knowledge and ability to assist the Director of Medical Physics in developing, implementing, and reviewing of policies and procedures that encompass radiation therapy equipment
- Assumes responsibility for maintaining proficient in job skills and seeks opportunities for continued growth
- Participates in education activities as evidenced by documentation

- Demonstrates and possesses the ability to obtain, interpret, and assess information reflective of the patient's requirements relative to age specific needs
- Possesses the knowledge and demonstrates the ability to interact with each age specific age group of patient's, i.e., neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric
- Demonstrates a knowledge of principles of human growth and development and demonstrates the ability to provide competent care with an understanding of the cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological maturation process
- Participates in the Radiation Oncology Quality Improvement Program
- Develops and conducts a comprehensive quality improvement indicator which includes collection and evaluation of data
- Assists the Director of Medical Physics in performing Quality Control tests to monitor baseline performance values
- Maintains accurate records that meet New York State guideline
- Assists the Director of Medical Physics in developing policies and procedures relative to Radiation Oncology
- Ensures all policies and procedures are current and reflect any changes in new procedures
- Provides in-services for staff
- Shares knowledge and information regarding radiation technology and physics
- Must be able to derive complex computerized treatment plans, and communicate these aspects to the Radiation Oncologist for plan approval, and to the Radiation Therapist for plan implementation
QualificationsMinimum Education: The individual must hold a Master's Degree and/or a Doctoral Degree in Radiation Therapy Physics or a closely related field such as physics, biophysics or health physics acceptable to the Director of Radiation.
Minimum Experience: The individual must complete one year of full time training in a therapeutic physics and an additional year of full time work experience under the supervision of a radiation therapy physicist at a medical institution.
Required Certification/Registration: The individual must be eligible for certification or be certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or American Board of Medical Physics (ABW) or have equivalent credentials acceptable to the Director of Radiation Oncology.
